well, my plan didnt quite work. as some of you know, i've been throwing myself into two 750 restorations and also building something of a special. the idea being that i would flood out negative thoughts from the past with 'busy-ness'.  it does work for a while, but for anyone who suffers from depression knows only too well, you can only keep the 'black dog' away for so long.  the slump usually lasts for a short while with me and things generally improve reasonably quickly. but this particular slump has been a bigee, probably due the false creation of upbeat-ness by pushing myself to do things constantly.   very wearing for someone who is generally laid back, or lazy as my wife calls it.  riding has been a godsend as usual, but there have been the odd occasion where i have had to stop as i cant see through the tears; bit of a tough one for a 58 year old to admit to. but i know there are others on here who suffer in a similar way, so i'm not alone.  all bike work has come to a dead stop for some time but i'm collecting my engine cases this weekend and i'm hoping that will give me the kick in the backside that i need.

Project Board / 500-4 scrapheap challenge
« on: February 26, 2018, 07:44:53 PM »
dont know if this is going anywhere, but i'll give it a shot.  back in 2015 i bought the remains of a 500-4 for £90. it was just up the road and the seller even dropped it at my house!

it came with a full set of original pipes which i sold for £60 so it's effectively cost me 30 quid. everything was seized solid and the frame was rusted through in some areas but i thought it would be a fun school project as i work as a site manager at a residential behavioural school. some of the kids are keen to learn about mechanics so they started to help me dismantle it.  however, it really was too bad to work on, the kids rounding off or snapping the many rusted in bolts and screws, so i put it in the boiler house and gave them a worn out superdream which was mouldering behind my shed. this has proved to be a much better choice as they are enjoying taking it apart.
so i'm attempting to strip the engine in my dinner breaks but it may well end up as scrap if it doesnt work out.  i hacksawed the frame away but the long mounting bolts are proving something of a challenge.   i suspect they may have to be drilled out >:(

« on: February 10, 2018, 11:59:49 AM »
anyone know who would supply good quality gasket sets for the f2, preferably in the uk?  vesrah or NP seem to be the best bet? also genuine headgaskets.

thanks

Tricks & Tips / removing countershaft bearing holder on the 750
« on: February 05, 2018, 05:18:06 PM »
the four screws holding the bearing holder in place are notoriously difficult to remove, mainly because of the large head area bonding itself to the alloy body.  i posted a question on my rebuild thread and got a few helpful suggestions. i combined two of them to come up with my own solution which is as follows.  you will need a cordless drill with clutch and a ph3 bit, preferably in a bit holder. the engine needs to be up against something solid as you need to press really hard against the cordless drill.  set it to reverse and the clutch setting to a low setting so it slips easily.  sit the battery end of the drill on the bench as shown in the pic and hold it dead straight against the screw.  give it a squeeze and the clutch will slip.  turn the clutch up a notch and squeeze again.  keep doing this until you feel the drill try to twist. usually at this point the screw will come undone.
however, if you look closely at the top screw, you can see it has been drilled.  as the cordless was that little bit too high to sit on the bench and i was too lazy to pack something under it, i thought i would just try and hold it straight, despite my mechanical intuition screaming at me to do it properly.  needless to say, it rounded off very quickly.  so lesson learnt - dont cut corners!!

Project Board / phil read rep/honda britain restoration
« on: January 31, 2018, 07:46:07 PM »
just a quick recap. back in february last year, i started a thread about my prr/britain projects; the britain more or less complete but dismantled, and the prr something of a mishmash.  the bulk of the bodywork, wheels etc came from ukpete on here, the genuine prr frame came from john white, our resident prr specialist and a suitable low mileage donor bike came from james down in sunny sussex.  i intended to be well into both bikes by now but life sometimes comes along and punches you in the face, and it's been a long slow process to a recovery of sorts.  at this moment i'm doing ok and i'm at the point where i am confident enough to tackle both projects.  having been brought up on a diet of fordson majors, nuffields, massey fergusons and various other items of farm machinery, i am confident in my mechanical ability, but i've been really struggling with the confidence (and confidence generally) to tackle a 750-4 motor which i have never worked on before.  but thanks to watching peter andersons very helpful youtube videos and gaining inspiration from a number of rebuilds on here, nurse julie's 400-4 restoration especially, i finally plucked up the courage to go for it.  the three pics below are the prr as bought, the britain as bought (the prr frame also in the pic) and the donor bike.

i'm using the haynes manual along with a printed copy of the honda workshop manual, essential if youre not over familiar with these engines,  and i also tend to be a little OCD about labelling, photographing and making notes as i go along. i also lay everything out in the order of dismantling otherwise i wont remember the rebuild sequence.

the barrels were seriously stuck on and it took a lot of persuasion to free it.  once it came off, i was surprised to see that two studs were really corroded and the rust had bonded quite solid into the head.  just goes to show that even very low mileage bikes can have a little surprise for you when they are opened up.

CB750 / top tube frame mod
« on: January 25, 2018, 09:04:43 PM »
ive had a quick search but cant find much info about this mod. after struggling to remove the frame from my F2 engine (on its side) i can now see the benefits. i have both read rep and britain frames lined up for powder coat but might be worth my while doing this mod now. any thoughts on butchering a pair of classics? it's not visible though so the purists wont foam at the mouth too much...

i was trawling through ebay, as you do, and this rusty little heap turns up cheap and i couldnt resist it. it seems all there but in dire need of a total rebuild. it will sit in the back of the shed until i finish my hondas first though. i cant seem to post pictures so you'll have to google it.

Other Bikes / gold wing - yes or no?
« on: November 07, 2017, 10:17:22 PM »
i've been offered a very shabby non-runner goldwing but i'm thinking it looks rather more complicated to what i'm used to. are they complicated and expensive to rebuild? all my money is going towards my two 750-4s at the mo so i cant spend a great deal. it would be more of a winter hack/runabout and definitely not restored/standard. should i or shouldnt i?

CB750 / cb750f2 gasket sets
« on: October 03, 2017, 08:45:26 PM »
after a trawl on the forum, it seems that the best full gasket sets are either vesrah or NP. where can i get these from and are they still available? i will stick with the genuine head gasket though. thanks.

Other Bikes / no laughing please...
« on: September 04, 2017, 06:35:37 PM »
i've been struggling to ride recently as my hip started playing up, followed by a major knee problem. my well used versys is now sitting idle, as is my fazer and both will soon be sold as i cant even change gear. looking around for something to keep riding, i came across the weirdest thing i've ever seen - a honda DN-01 with automatic gearbox. anyway, after trying the thing out, i'm picking it up on saturday from colwyn bay and riding home to carmarthen, probably in the rain as usual. i'll post some pics up when i get a chance.

Misc / Open / F2 caliper red spot
« on: April 01, 2017, 08:20:01 AM »

for those of us who are particularly anal about restoration, i am in the process of restoring my 750F2 calipers and the best match to the original is PJ1 satin black. however, for that authentic finish, each caliper should have a red quality control spot and after trying to find the correct colour match, i have since found out that they are in fact paint stickers. these are still available in a strip of 3 from DS under the code APR170401. i ordered 2 sets and he only has a few left. so if you are after that genuine look, order now as they will no longer be available.

CB500/550 / what year is my 500 engine?
« on: March 18, 2017, 02:50:27 PM »
can anyone tell me what year my 500 engine is? CB500E - 2008943.  i'm a site manager at a residential behavioural school and one of the kids is taking a keen interest in motorcycle mechanics, so it's going to be a bit of a school project.
