Ey up. Any fellow West Yorkshire folk here.
Im looking for recommendations for a good engineering shop for re-boring / head / general engine refurb or bead blasting etc, as I'm looking at buying a K1 which will no doubt need some TLC.
Does anyone have experience with a good shop in the area?
Whats the average cost say to rebore a 750 if needed (say .25 overbore as an example)?
I dont know what needs doing yet as I dont even have the bike but looking to get ideas of costs for work.

Reccomend Trigger.
Watch out for his broom.

Are you calling Julie a broom John?, I'd start running now if you are. ;D ;D ;D
As if I would.
She could sweep me away with ease.

I get called a lot worse than a broom Ken, in fact, I take being called a broom quite pleasing 😁😁😁😁

It's the fun of the forum.
We all know each other.
And have a daft sense of humour

I would take caution on reboring firms .. a lot of them don't work to Jap bike tolerances. You won't go wrong if you go to Trigger & Julie for at least rebore & head work. ....plus a very tranquil and charming part of the country to visit and always a warm welcome there. As you will gather from the banter they are quite popular on here. ;)
Also, if you are shopping around for pistons make sure the +0.25mm is enough for the wear on your bores (or they have not been bored already). Quite often if there has been water or rust damage or ring breakage you will need to go up two rebore sizes.

Thanks Ash. Glad I joined this group. Lots of useful leads already

I agree with Ash, be very careful of engineering firms who undertake rebores on Jap bikes. I had an engine rebored and advised the engineer of the Honda specification for the piston to bore clearance. The engineer rebored the barrel oversize. When I asked why he told me the piston would sieze if he bored the barrel to the Honda spec! Result: the engine used so much oil so quickly it siezed! I had to find another barrel, a new piston, rebuild the crank, new con-rod and regrind of the cam as a result. I went to another company to get the rebore the second time! A very expensive lesson.
I have never personally used Trigger but I would have no hesitation to do so in the future, he knows these engines better than anyone else.
Good luck with your quest to buy a sohc, you won't be disappointed 👍.

And if anyone recommend a certain shop in Sheffield with the initials SS stay a mile away.
Don't ask how I know but Trigger ended up putting it right first class work and his broom makes a lovely sausage sarni :o ;D
-
Sounds like I'll get in touch with Trigger if needed then. Thanks for all the info guys/gals. Now all I need to do is buy the bloody bike!
