Title: Fuel tap

Hi all

Does anybody know if there is a repair kit to repair a fuel tank tap for the CB400F (m20 thread)

Mine does not fully shut off and £80 for a complete new tap from DSS seems a tad steep

Plenty of cheap m16 taps about on eBay but no m20 type?

DSS sells an o-ring repair kit for the fuel taps.  It's two o-rings placed side by side as the full thickness o-ring is no longer available. I used them on my fuel tap and it cured the leak. Make sure you use some rubber lube on them though otherwise they bind making the tap very difficult to turn.

Hi Dave

There no actual external leak from the tap but fuel is still passing the shut off valve to the carbs

I am reluctant to take apart just in case anything rubber fall apart but I think a seal like this needs replacing?

I had the repair kit from DS but retained the original large O ring as I wasn't keen on putting two O rings in. If the tap is leaking externally by the lever you pretty much have to use the two rings. I cleaned all the staining off the plastic centre part - so far it hasn't leaked. There are two O rings in the kit as the ones supplied are too thin. It's a shame they are not supplied with one ring the right size. My tank filter was in shreds so it was worth the cost.

Ok as I read it there are just two orings that will require replacing and not a big rubber disc with holes in?

Is that correct

If the rubber disc is ripped or damaged my guess is it will have to be replaced. I dont know if you can get these as a seperate item? You could try making one from the correct thickness of Viton sheet but I think the original has a moulded lip on the edge. I would try the new O-Ring(s) first as it's a cheap and easy fix to do.

The kit I bought from DS consisted of strainer, large rubber bit with holes as post plus 2 O rings and the  connector. I used my original connector as it was brass rather than plated steel.

Al,
I had lots of trouble trying to find a tap for the M20 size fitting on my 400 tank - the old tap was a bit knackered and thought I'd quickly get a new one and play with restoring the original at leisure.
In the end got one from 4into1 in the US which so far seems fine - total cost was around £38 including postage and customs charges.
Still bemused that all the taps I could find are M16 yet I've got three 400 tanks all of which have the M20 size.

Thanks for the info

I will look into that site and also see what other goodies they do as due to fully restore my tank next with a paint job and a new cap so a new tap would finish all off

All sorted and thank you to everyone for their help

Bought a locking cap too and total including shipping (£75.70) is less than  as a genuine tap from DSS so happy days

The fuel tap looks like the rivetted type not like the screwed together original. Still not expensive if it fits OK - I thought these were listed on E-bay from a UK supplier they are probably the smaller thread ones.
