Title: Exhaust
Post by: AndyD on May 10, 2020, 09:37:04 AM
Morning all,
Well, the 400 fired up (much to my surprise) pretty well first try so bit of a result there - even ran quite smoothly considering only basic setting up done so far.
Knackered old battery but booster I bought a couple of years ago works amazingly well to help it on starter etc.
Lots of cable ties and bodges to hold everything together where I had assembled the bike to see if she ran OK before spending any more money on prettier bits - she's had a really hard life so every single part of the bike has been bodged, damaged, worn out or replaced with non-standard bits.
As she now looks more promising I'll slowly strip back bits to tidy up again - hopefully the engine and frame can stay untouched during this so it's easier to play with.
One thing I'm struggling with is the silencer. The bike came with the original downpipes and collector all in pretty good nick but no silencer. For the trial run I bodged a rusty old silencer off one of the CJ's with tin foil, clamps and cable ties just to save annoying every neighbour in the area.
I really want an original look silencer but it seems noone has these in stock any more - does anyone know if these are being re-made anywhere or is it now just a choice between finding one on eBay or going for a universal style silencer?
Cheers,
Andy

Has dave Silver stopped doing the 400 exhausts?

If you want something that is not an exact copy, but fairly close, there is a company in Redditch called Classic Bike Shop, and they stock Dunstall Decibel silencers at a reasonable price,(per Pair)! and are supplied with, it seems, a host of different adaptors to suit a range of bikes. If you study the advert it gives all the dimensions, diameters etc of the product. I may have to go out to the garage and take a tape measure with me! Good hunting. Mick.

Thanks,
I think DS and others haven't had the replica silencer in stock for some time - no idea if they plan to make more so guess maybe a few emails.
I'll have a look at the Dunstall one as it may be a good option at least in the short term
Cheers,
Andy

If you can afford them CMS might be able to help, they don't seem to have one just now as it is temporarily unavailable, but you can put it on a waiting list with them:  https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb400f-england_model14639/muffler-comp_18310377003/#.XrgWyGhKiUk

Thanks all,
Can't find anyone showing replica 400/4 silencers available but I have left messages to see if they are aiming to re-stock on these.
The temporary silencer I bodged on for testing is I think a Dunstall or very similar as the measurements are the same as shown on the Classic Bike Shop website.
There are a few options for these available but I'm a bit concerned how / if they would fit as the one I've put on clashes with the exhaust loop / bracket on the frame.
Not sure if I've put something on wrong with the headers but can't see adjustment would make a lot of difference.
Does anyone have some clear photos showing the silencer position / fixing relative to collector etc. so i can see if there's something obvious I'm missing please?
Cheers,
Andy

Excellent, thanks Julie,
I think it may just be a matter that the fixing lug on the real silencer sits under the bracket but the rusty lump I'm looking at wouldn't sit in line that way with the fixings it has.
Is the exhaust bracket a bolted item on your bike - as photo below mine has a loop with welded bracket.
I guess I might have to gamble on one of the universal silencers and find a way to fix it as best possible until I can get a replica one if they reappear.

Bit of an assessment stage now as I got the bike running the other day having slung it together quickly - now deciding how much to do / spend on her.

Cheers,
Andy

The original silencer to frame bracket it a separate part that bolts through the loop and sits on the back of the loop, so not welded like yours. There is an aftermarket 400/4 exhaust/muffler on eBay at the mo. It looks to be in good nick.

@AndyD, the brackett on my 400 is the same welded one as on yours.

Mine is an F2 so maybe the bracket set up is different on the earlier F's 🤔🤔🤔

I'm fairly sure my parakeet yellow 400 was an F2 and that had the exhaust bracket welded to the frame.

Thanks all,
The bolted option would be much more useful now when original silencers aren't easily available - I guess making up different hanger brackets would be a neat and quite easy solution rather than relying on the bits that come with the universal silencers.
Honsa - do you have a link to this silencer please - the only one I can find is the Classic Bike Shop universal 'Dunstall' style one or is that the one you meant?
The Classic Bike Shop one is the one Mick noted earlier and does look quite a good option so I may give this a go as cost is reasonable as well.

Andy

Thanks Graham,
Looks ideal - 3 days to go so hopefully stays a reasonable cost.

I don't know why my exhaust bracket is different if young Mick (Green1) says his was a welded plate on his F2 (unless his wasn't an F2 🙄🙄🙄)
Has anyone else got a separate bracket like mine?

Hi  i have a  1978 f2 and mine is same as Julie,s , and bolted through the loop Not welded  I'm with Julie as it must be earlier model      Ross

Thanks Ross, yes, I'm convinced now that the separate bracket is an F2 thing.

looking at Andys photos there doesn't seem to be a provision for a footrest on the loop So must be earlier than the f2  Plus the angle of the loop is different to to the f2 bolt through loops The bottom tube of the loop of bolt through runs parallel to silencer where as the welded loop has to have the welded bracket to obtain a parallel run to hold the silencer IMO  Ross

Ah yes, the footpeg was on the swing arm on some of the earlier models.

I thought the loop was introduced to mount the footrests for a more comfortable ride for pillion riders  Looks like Andys loop is only to hold the silencer?? Ross

My 400F is 1976 and has the frame hoops with bolt on bracket. According to the frame number it ties in with a late UK spec F model following the relocation of the rear footrests to the frame hoops. 🤔

Just found a crappy picture of my 400 and it turns out my frame was like Julies and the previous owner had mounted the exhaust in a bit of an oddball way.
Mine was a UK 75 I think  :-\

Hi,
Mine is a 1975 and the loop does just hold the exhaust, footrests on the swingarm.
Whether this is normal / correct or not I have no idea - the bike came as a basket case and she has had a very hard life by the look of it.
Every part has been beaten, bodged or replaced so nothing surprises me!
The frame had been powdercoated already so can't see if there are signs of modification to the frame though.
Hopefully once I get a silencer it'll fit OK somehow.

Now the bike runs I'll have loads of questions on bits to sort properly so hopefully won't bore everyone too much.

Cheers,
Andy
