CB350/400 / Re: Exhaust preservation

I personally think we have it the wrong way round, instead of strangling economies and making people poorer and face greater hardship which inevitably means they will be become more desperate and make the problem worse we should be using our greatest asset science to fix the problem.

Find a way of neutralising greenhouse gasses, scrub the atmosphere of C02 and other nasties, work together to cool the earth down using the knowledge we have accrued rather than the taboos some of us like to preach to. The current approach, wind and solar energy, electric cars etc just are not going to work so stop the loony brigade taking us down the path to economic and social destruction in the name of salvation.

Jeez now that was a rant wasnt it!

Out & About / Ayr Classic Motorcycle Show
« on: June 25, 2022, 11:23:35 PM »
Had a great day out today as part of the Ayr Classic motorcycle clubs show at the Robbie Burns Museum Alloway.

Some wonderful bikes, gorgeous 400 four absolutely immaculate and a GPZ900 that had only done 1024 miles and looked brand new. My CBX got a lot of attention despite being filthy after riding through some terrible weather to get to the venue. Lots of requests to hear the bike running which I duly delivered  ;D sorry nothing can beat the sound of a six through a relatively open exhaust the Harley's in the background had no chance (no offence intended  :D)

In all a great day, venue, people and overall weather

Hi Ted, I pondered this question myself. The Dynatec leads have suppression built in so I wondered if I should be using 'R' rated plugs so I wrote to Larry Nelson in Dynatec technical support, this is what he said -

Quote
It really does not matter if you use a standard or resister type spark plugs. You could actually use the DW-800 plug wires suppression core plug wires with resister plugs and never notice any difference.
For this reason, we will leave this at your discretion, but you can't go wrong either way!

Currently using R rated plugs in my GL1000 with a Dynatec set up and runs great, opposite on my 550 and runs great so it does not seem to matter which way

Thanks Ted.

Hasnt all been straight forward but I touched lucky with the engine itself it is in great shape.

V5 arrived today  ;D ;D ;D All in took just short of 4 weeks which is brilliant considering Easter and May day would have slowed things down. Also considering VJMC got one digit wrong on the frame number which I only noticed after posting the application. Then they followed up with totally the wrong advice which thankfully I ignored. Moral here is check and double check the paperwork.

So I am off to Ayr tomorrow for a number plate, 140 mile plus round trip but hopefully I may get a ride in as the weather looks good.

Bit nervous about the first ride, hopefully everything will work ok.

So did you paint it all yourself Ken? Rattle cans or do you have a paint booth?

I kind of have a paint booth. I section off a portion of the garage with plastic sheet which covers the ceiling, walls and floor and is all Velcro attached together. Actually quite effective and minimises the amount of overspray getting out. HVLP guns are good at minimising overspray as well.

I have an air fed mask and powerful compressor which allows me to use 2K clear for finishing.

Also have a small vinyl cutter which I use to make masks for the lettering, design the lettering in CorelDraw.

I love the red colour scheme suits it so much better than the original silver.

Did you do a project build post on here or is it too new a model?

Thanks for the comments everyone much appreciated.

Thanks ted you can find my build thread over on the CBX forum - http://www.cbxclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=11871

The red is supposed to be Candy Glory Red as found on the Z model CBX's. I used RSBike Paint colour and base coat but I just could not get it to come out exactly the same, always a little darker but I am pleased with the colour itself so what the hey!

Just finished my CBX1000C restoration and impatiently waiting for the V5 to come so I can have my first proper ride.

I imported the bike from the US in 2020, mechanically sound but very poor cosmetically and the rear of the frame was quite badly bent, this is how the bike looked -

I did a full bare frame restore, every part was polished or painted, I did all the work involved myself. I dont like either the silver/grey or white colours used on the C model and not being worried about originality I have gone for a red scheme which follows loosely the design scheme of the original bike, really pleased with how its turned out -

The bike is fitted with a SuperTrapp stainless exhaust that was very badly damaged so I spent a long time repairing it. Took the dents out of the downpipes with various sized steel balls hammer through the tubes, worked a treat. The reason I wanted to save the exhaust was this noise -

Cant wait to go for a ride.

I seem to recall using an M16 x 50mm fine thread bolt - https://www.spaldingfasteners.co.uk/m16-metric-fine-8-8-grade-high-tensile-zinc-hex-head-fully-threaded-set-screws/ and an impact wrench, just seemed to fall off my 77 550K3 as soon as I pressed the trigger. This would work I imagine even with the crank out of the engine.

Absolutely gorgeous Ted, you should be very proud well done!

Well done Ted, real milestone achieved, its always a relief when everything goes well.

I would agree with Ken on this one. Having stripped many alloy casings myself in my time you will notice the surface imperfections that just didnt appear to be there before, because they were hidden by silver paint.  :)

Costs would have prevented Honda investing the time and energy into polishing the castings to a good enough standard to then cover them just with clear coat.

For the cross threaded I was going to suggest a thread chaser but 12mm ones seem to be hard to come by now - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164760112423?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338781099&toolid=20006&customid=V2CztEsOAAAAOh7WwmrIZc80laQGAAAAAA&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1MBULEJRJRvCLVqGG0nx-Iw47

The beauty of them is that they work in reverse using the good threads further into the hole and chasing them back outwards. A little grease on the chaser stops any bits falling into the cylinder but there generally isnt that much swarf

The best black parts restorer I have ever come across is Solution Finish - https://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/solution-finish-black-trim-restorer-30ml-bottle?gclid=CjwKCAiAjoeRBhAJEiwAYY3nDHf-8Bs55FOde8AWfjS9ZwZyhDICrDkOBAylowgga2AABxqpjdqTmBoCG5kQAvD_BwE

It isnt a polish which from my experience just shows up any surface marring or other defects, rather it is a actually a dye. You apply with a soft tissue and either leave on for a gloss finish or wipe off almost immediately for a matt finish.

It seems expensive but you only actually need a very small amount. It hasnt let me down on any black plastic part yet.

I always wondered why someone didn't sue the Government for breach of Contract, they made a contract with everyone to pay pension at 65 or 60 if you were a woman, yet they broke that contract and no one said a thing.

I had to work an extra year because I missed the cutoff date by a few months, cost me another year of NI contributions and a loss of £176 a month in pension payments.

Also we were still in the EU when this happened, so they were supposed to conform to EU guidelines on pension age yet they ignored all that. They retire much earlier in France for instance.

Wendy had to work another 6 years her pension age moved from 60 to 66 as she was born in 1954.

What annoys me about this is it does not save the government any money, by forcing the older generation to work longer in key sectors you are making younger people unemployed, so what you save in pension payments you lose in unemployment benefits

Queens Park were amazing with their prices on new bikes. I remember being pig sick that I could have got my GL1000 for a good deal less than I paid for it from Rogersons in Orrel.

My mate bought a CJ250T from them again considerably cheaper but as far as I am concerned a horrible bike. At one point we made the journey there every couple of weeks on a Saturday.
