Misc / Open / Re: Parts washer fluid, what does everyone use?
« on: February 15, 2022, 11:34:49 PM »
We used Safety Kleen in the parts washer at Queens Park Motors

In Salford back in the 70s Ken? honestly they had the most amazing deals on new bikes back then did you work there?

By far the most amazing parts washer I have ever come across is this stuff -  https://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-heavy-duty-degreaser-5ltr/88668 cheap and just cuts through the crud like a knife through butter, dont use anything else for normal parts washing.

For Ultrasonic stuff I use various cleaners from Allendale Ultrasonics - https://www.allendale-ultrasonics.co.uk/detergents-and-fluids

Do any of those bikes actually sell for that sort of money? offered for sale yes but honestly who has £30k to spend on what might be an 'investment' nowadays, if you have good luck to you but jeezz!!!

Worries me for us mere mortals with a few pennies to spend on this great past time

Sorry to hear about the engine Roy it is a bit of a lottery I think buying blind from the US, will the new engine with a different serial number make the process of registration a little trickier?

The bike itself reminds me a lot of my 550 which had sat outside in Scotland unprotected for a few years. With the exception of the carbs and engine I think most things you would have planned to change anyway, even the engine would have got a good working over so in my view it isnt too bad.

To me it all adds to the challenge and immense satisfaction when you have completed a beautiful bike.

I bought handlebar switches from here - https://www.cb-four.com/cgi-bin/shop/ and found them to be quite good quality, havent had any problems at all with them

Looking forward to updates

Thanks to this forum I have also moved to Peter James and saved £55 on two bikes.

I have never really got insurance though, my car insurance has dropped by £186 because I moved to a remote spot in Scotland but where I was before was equally a nice area with low crime rates, I think they just make it up as they go along

Sorry it is taking so long, perhaps Billy is ill or the container hasnt actually been delivered to him yet. The number I had for him was - 07914 499906 which looks more of a mobile number rather than the landline 01229 number (personally never bother answering my landline number anymore as it is always scammers).

Hopefully you will hear soon, Billy didnt actually contact me about delivery until he was actually on the road delivering the bike! Talking to him at the time of delivery he did seem like a genuine bloke.

Rough mask and paint as suggested with Simoniz or other engine paint. Allow to dry fully. Use a small wood block with 1200 grit wet and dry with soapy water to remove all the paint from the top surface then polish carefully using solvol and a cloth backed up with the same wood block or if you have one a polishing machine and buffing wheels. You will not remove the dried paint in the recessed areas if you are careful

I got mine from here on ebay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIC-Pressed-Vintage-Motorcycle-Number-Plate-Border-9-x-7-HEAVY-DUTY/124878287571 and was absolutely completely gobsmacked at how nice they were

« on: January 18, 2022, 11:26:27 PM »
Thanks for your help everyone.

I more than likely will get an MOT once I have the bike registered, it is just the logistics of getting the bike to an MOT centre. I know I can get insurance on the VIN and I believe technically I can ride to a booked MOT without a registration plate but I just dont fancy getting waved at furiously by other drivers (never see any police around here so that isnt a problem). Trying to get someone I can trust out here to trailer the bike at a reasonable cost is a none starter.

As for an inspector I cant imagine they will want to travel all the way to this remote spot, unless they are paid by the mile of course :)

Thanks Julie,

I am assuming the June 1981 manufacture is shown on the VIN plate ? -

I will use the VJMC dating service to get it qualified, assuming this is the case I should be ok

Misc / Open / Classic Vehicle MOT Exemption
« on: January 18, 2022, 11:44:35 AM »
Hi All,

Need a little help with this as I am confused by the .gov.uk website which isnt clear.

According to the VIN plate my CBX it was built in June 1981 but the American title document simply states it is a 1982 vehicle.

So Tax exemption looks ok as the site currently says - 'You can apply to stop paying for vehicle tax from 1 April 2021 if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1981.'  it hasnt been updated yet so I can assume as my bike was built before 1 January 1982 I will be able to apply for exemption from this April.

Now the MOT guidance site https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles starts out well - 'the vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago' but then when you follow the link to look at the full guidance the statement changes to - 'You do not need to get an MOT if the vehicle was first registered more than 40 years ago'. The 'built' element seems to disappear.

Does anyone know the definitive answer?

I live in a remote location so getting the bike to an MOT station in order to register it for the first time will be a challenge so hopefully the 'built' clause will get me out of this if I wait until April

I think it took about a week for me to get the bike once Billy took delivery.

I was like a big kid the day it arrived I couldn't wait to get at it.

Hats off to you Ted doing the frame blue, brave move but it has paid off immensely the bike looks great. Cant wait to see what you come up with for the tank and panels colour

Ken, Tried to email you, If you are taking your previous employer to a tribunal be very careful about mentioning them in an open forum.

Sorry to hear about your health issues it sounds horrendous, all the more wonder at what you can achieve with all that polishing, it is actually quite tiring to do.
