Title: Hondaman's CB750 Book is Here at Last!
Post by: SteveD CB500K0 on February 08, 2010, 09:18:02 AM
Mark Paris (Hondaman) is a stalwart of .net (www.sohc4.net) and has spent the last 4 years writing his own book on the CB750. It is a "coffee table" book and includes pictures submitted by members of .net over the years. Mark is hugely experienced (almost as much as Bryan...  ;)) and has put that experience and his time into this book - urged on by the members of course!

As with any "print to order" book, it is not cheap. Less than an OEM pipe for your CB, but still not cheap.

Here's what he has to say:

Well, this thing is finally done...  :P
Labor of love! It only took 4 years and as many bikes to get all the pictures. The quality resembles a fancy "coffee table" book, and I'm real happy with the way that came out, especially with the pictures.

Sometime in the near future, I'll offer a DVD from here, too, of all the pictures from the book (and a lot more that didn't make the cut), because some of you have asked for that. That way, if you're pondering a repair of some sort, you can just browse the pictures without all that annoying text in between them...  Grin

I'll be keeping copies on hand, both so I can send them out and make a $1 donation for each one to the site (for all of us and our moderators and web-spinners). And, for those of you who are wanting a signed copy (?) from me...they should become available about Feb. 15th, because I just ordered them today.

If you want to get one directly instead, here's the "direct buy" link from www.Lulu.com:
http://www.lulu.com/browse/search.php?fSearchFamily=2&fSearch=&fSubmitSearch=Go&fSearchSource=a&fSearchData%5Btitle%5D=My+CB750+book&fSearchData%5Bauthor%5D=&showingSubPanels=advancedSearchPanel_title_creator
You can also search there, by title, for "My CB750 book" and it will bring it up. They print it on demand and ship it, taking about 3-5 days.

When Amazon and Barnes and Nobles get it posted, I'll put their links here, too.

When I eventually get my website up (with all the other pieces and parts for the SOHC4 bikes) I'll post that link here, too.

I'm guessing the postage at $10 from my house (Priority Mail, "If it fits, it ships" boxes) in the U.S. right now: I'll find out more next week about "book rates" and other cheaper forms of shipping. Please don't actually order one from me before about Thursday (2/18/10), so I can find out the shipping first: then I'll re-edit this post with that info.

The paperback edition will be $83 per copy (which includes the $1 back to this site), from this printing (plus shipping). That price may change in future printings: I'm new at this game. For signed ones (no extra charge...I wouldn't want someone writing in MY book!), tell me how you'd like it prefixed, so please include that info when ordering, somehow.   ???

My Paypal is that same e-mail: mgparis@concentric.net. Checks, money orders, etc., go to: Mark Paris, 8903 W. Florida Ave., Lakewood, CO 80232.

A million thanks to all of you: without your constant encouragement, razzing, nudging, bugging and nagging, not to mention your shared pictures, parts that some of you sent, and other tips and hints to add into the chapters, I would probably have never finished this work!  You're all a part of this book  ;D

After discussing a UK "distribution" to try and reduce shipping costs, Mark has discovered that the company will deliver a "print file" to a local outfit (after commission of course) so that it can be printed locally on local sized (A4) paper.

Please post on here if you are interested.

The cost will be at least

I think that I would need to see a preview before ordering a book of this type.

Count me in for a copy.  Sounds like it just became available in the US a few days ago, when would it be available in the UK?  Does the choice of paperback or hardback still apply?

thanks

Mark (Hondaman) has heard from lulu (the publisher) and they are arranging a link with a UK print house. You will be able to order on the lulu website, but when you put in "UK" (or any other European country), it will quote you local postage. It will then send the order to the UK outlet for printing and dispatch.

Don't rush there until we get the go-ahead though as I still need to be convinced that Marks book will transfer onto A4 without cropping(?) - I have asked for a sample (actually, just a pdf of a few pages on A4 to prove that they know what they are doing!)

Watch this space.

Hi all,

Looking forward to hearing more about the UK availability of Hondaman's book!.

He got my bike back on the road and MOT'd (figuratively speaking, gave me some good advice on SOHC4.net) so be a nice way to repay him and get what will no doubt be a great book!

Best regards,

Paul

I have ordered my UK-printed A4 sized book from www.lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/my-cb750-book-paperback-size-a4/8412928) today.

Mark has arranged this through lulu.com to reduce shipping costs in the UK (

Any idea of a delivery date Steve? I may follow suit and order one myself as Mark has put so much into that book. He is the real deal on all things SOHC as far as I can see.
If you are not likely to get yours before the end of the month, can you post a reply and I will order anyway.
Thanks
Seamus

Arrived Friday lunchtime.

For the price of 2.5 Haynes manuals, this has to be the most useful "how to" book I have ever bought.

Everything in minute detail, pictures galore and text backed by years of experience.

I write marketing stuff and get a bit anal about fonts and formatting and stuff - but hey! Mark spent 3 years writing this and as it says on the cover "My CB750 Book"

If only someone would write one for the 500...

Steve

PS: Still time to get your 10% off using the discount code before 31st March.

Mine turned up today. Only had a quick look, but it is very good. Lots of detail.

Hopefully get a bit more time in the next few days. Mark has put a lot of himself into this project and should be proud of the result.

Updated info and summer offers:

Mark wrote:

Lulu is running a "free shipping" offer if you order one of these books directly from them at Lulu.com: enter "FREESHIP" as a coupon if the site does not automatically add it to your oder. AUS riders: here's your big chance!

The book entered its Second Revision printing last month. The Carburetor drawings are less grainy, now.  Smiley The Second Revision includes another START schematic I had forgotten about, but recently ran across, in "Old Factory" K3 and K4 bikes. It is about 1/2 as common as the one shown in the book, so I have added it below so you can download and print a copy for your reference if you have the earlier book. It looks grainy on the screen, but prints out clearly.

Several of you have written, asking "What's in the book?". So, here's a thumbnail sketch (which may mean lots more to you after you see certain pictures in the book...it's healed now...).
-Theory sections: how the carbs, alternator, electrical, and suspension stuff works. Also, there's detail on the oiling principles used in this engine and the drive chain itself, along with notes on Honda's unique rear drive sprockets for these bikes (made only by me, today).
-Engine removal, teardown, and reassembly (3 separate chapters).
-Engine Inspection (a chapter by itself, noting wear points and what to do about them).
-Suspension: how the 750 chassis works, alignments, fixes, steering head bearing replacement, swingarm system information, shocks and their effects, forks and their different types (and how they work and how to tune them). General chassis tuning discussion, too.
-Front and rear wheels: bearings, brakes, and improvements, and diagnosis of troubles.
-Carburetors: detailed theory on how they work. How to clean them properly, wear points to watch.
-Electrical: all of the circuits of the bikes in all versions of the wiring harnesses, broken down into individual functions like Headlight circuit, Starter circuit, etc. How the charging system works (alternator, regulator, and rectifier). Electrical diagnosis and how to find the things that cause trouble (and fix them for good!). How to rebuild the starter solenoid and the handlebar switches. How to add relay(s) to the system to extend the handlebar switch life and generally improve the original electrical performance. How to change the fuseholder(s) to something more modern and more reliable, and where to get all these parts.
-Performance improvements: Two chapters-the first is stuff you can do yourself to recover up to 10 of the "lost" HP of the K3 and later engines. The second chapter is about going beyond that, while still preserving a long-lived engine.
Appendixes: General diagnosis, Maintenance schedule, Tuneup, Valve Repairs (minor valve job), Transistorized Ignition installation (mine), cosmetic changes over the years, and Tuneup.

It's mostly written the way I answer folk's questions here at SOHC4.net, and arranged more like a "class" on the bikes instead of just a reference manual. You'll be able to use the Index to find things, and if you're rebuilding an engine it will take you step-by-step through the Inspection process.

I'll be keeping some copies on hand, both so I can sign them for those of you who want it, and so I can make a $1 donation to the site for each one I "handle" (for all of us and our moderators and web-spinners).

Directly from the publisher:
If you want to get one directly from the publisher instead, here's the "direct buy" link from www.Lulu.com:
http://www.lulu.com/browse/search.php?fSearchFamily=2&fSearch=&fSubmitSearch=Go&fSearchSource=a&fSearchData%5Btitle%5D=My+CB750+book&fSearchData%5Bauthor%5D=&showingSubPanels=advancedSearchPanel_title_creator
They are selling it at $99.10 hardcover and $91.50 paperback.
You can also search there, by title, for "My CB750 book" and it will bring it up in both paperback and hardcover versions. They print it on demand and ship it. If you are ordering an "on demand" copy in Europe or UK, Lulu says it will print in those countries now and the shipping will be lower. Their forte' is on-demand printing: when I order in bulk it takes a long time to get them. I made a separate A4 format version for you Euro readers, but they only have that size in paperback. NOTE: Lulu is offering FREE SUMMER SHIPPING, no small thing for overseas riders!

Signed copies from me:
I buy some in blocks of 10 or more to get a discounts for SOHC4 members only, for those who want them signed. The paperback (8.5x11 size) is $83 USD per copy (which includes the $1 back to this site), from this printing (plus shipping).
The hardback edition is $93 USD per copy (also includes $1 donation) from this printing (plus shipping).

For signed ones, just tell me how you'd like it prefixed ("To: [name]...") and I'll add something to that, so please include that info when ordering, somehow.

Postage from my house for either unmolested or signed copies: (verified 2/10/2010)
Priority Mail, "If it fits, it ships" boxes: $10.70 in the U.S. (mostly due to weight).
To UK or AUS (if you REALLY want that signature thing): $22.05 .
I think places like The Netherlands is the same as UK.
To Israel: $22.33 (I know, you all like to spell it "Isreal" over there...  Cheesy ).
To Canada: $14.20 for either soft or hard cover.

My Paypal is: mgparis@concentric.net.
Checks, money orders, etc., go to: Mark Paris, 8903 W. Florida Ave., Lakewood, CO 80232.

A million thanks to all of you for being part of this book!

Received my Hard cover copy a few days ago...it is worth every penny !!! I have owned my CB 740 K4 for 3 years, the Haynes manual is very useful but simply lacks the modifications of the KO-K6 through the years.
Appendix G (tuning, 4 pages) explains the carburettor modifications (main jet sizes/slide needle notch position) together with the fact that there are 3 No. different spark advancers that have a relationship with the final drive...these 4 pages alone are worth
