I’m not convinced that found its way in there when I removed generator and cover.

Looks like the washer from the gearshaft idler that the starter motor drives.

Yes your right! Didn’t know when I first opened it up but got it out with magnet then looked up parts list. Is it possible for that to slip behind the starter pinion when removing cover?

Its defo as k2-k6 suggests - and may have fallen down as you removed the shaft that holds the idler gear

Yes it will slip out if not careful.
The shaft is just floating and retained by the cover preventing it moving, if it's pulled out as you withdraw the cover then the washer can just drop off.

Does the washer go between idler and cover?

Yes, it is to stop the cog rubbing the alternator housing ;)

Looks like it has been curled round the float valve pin.
