Out & About / Crich in July
« Last post by paulbaker1954 on Today at 12:53:08 PM »
Hi
I just booked for Crich in July can I assume there will be an SOHC area?

How do I notify them I want to be in that area?

Cheers

Agree, there’s something calming about hearing and watching them ticking over. The governor regulates speed from 375 to 475rpm. Further improvements/repairs - the small end bush needs replacing. Magneto needs. Bit of cleaning too. Was thinking of the local shows indeed Ian. I would love to know why this engine was sitting in the loft connected to nothing. For some reason it was replaced with a Lister 4hp which was still connected to the old mill until late Dec 2021. It is now in my care as well. The last time the mill was used would have been around the mid 60’s. So it is at least 60 years since the Fairbanks ran.

When you assembled the crankcase halves is it possible that an excess of Hondabond could have entered somewhere to lead to this problem? Could the crank seals be somehow causing the extra binding if they have distorted?

I'm assuming you have not fitted the block yet.

I think you will have to split the cases again to investigate further.

I have considered if the seals were the problem, but fitted well and tightening only happens on final torque of mains bolts.

I will try easing them off and re torquing.

You can turn the crank but do need a spanner on the alternator bolt.

Wondering if I am being too cautious.

Can you normally turn by hand on rotor without pistons fitted?

Nice bike, open vistas, a great combination Ian!
You've made a great job of the 550, looks very nice and original spec..

I like the sound of some of the 4 into 2 and 4 into 1 systems, but with stock pipes, I'm reluctant to make the change, even though it would increase my enjoyment of the bike.

No such issue with this bike. A decent price, if it has been put together properly, with money left over for sexy new pipes.

Looks like whoever fitted those pipes was smoking something very strong, they are really horrible.

Hi Dave,
The Churchill Barriers (4 in total) were built during WW2 after a German Sub got through the blockship barrier to enter Scapa Flow and sank the Royal Oak with the loss of many hundreds of lives.  Churchill brought about the building of 4 barriers linking Islands to the south of the Orkney Mainland to prevent such a thing being repeated.  Much of the work was carried out by Italian POWs, who also built the World famous Italian Chapel.  Eventually roads were constructed on the barriers so you can now travel from Holm to Burwick which previously had to be done by boat.  I'm sure Johnny will chime in with more info - don't think he (or Churchill) helped build them though!

Very nice looking motorcycle with a perfect backdrop.
So, what is a Churchill barrier Ian?
