I'm pleased I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Yeah I'd prefer not to have them at all, but they're a bit necessary in busy traffic. They could have been made half the size though, and only need to stick out an inch, bit of an eyesore really.

I hope I'm not going to incite anything here. My '77 F2 is lovely, completely original and I love almost everything about it. The only things that bothers me aesthetically are the lollipop indicators. I feel they're too big and stick out too far. I'm willing to listen to others' opinions about them, but I've started looking for replacements, although I'd definitely keep the originals aside. I saw a wee Morini today that had it's indicators tucked in nice and close and they just looked so much more appealing.

If anyone knows of a similar looking but more compact replacement indicator I'd love to have a look.

Yeah I gave that screen a good cleaning too, amazing how stuff builds up and it's kinda fun to take all that apart and have a good look too

I just took the oil pan off to make sure I got out as much old oil as I could. There was also a bit of crusty old sediment in the oil pan when I removed it which I cleaned out. I drained it for about six hours and I guess I could probably change the oil and filter next time without removing the pan. will probably invest in a new set of bolts too. Thanks for the reassuring words everybody..

CB500/550 / Broken Oil Pan Bolt

I changed my oil filter and oil today for the first time. All was going swimmingly until I got to the very last pan bolt which I overtightened and snapped off. I was left with two thirds of the engine bolt in my hand.
It all seems to be oil tight, I refilled the oil and rode around for an hour or so with no leakage.
I'm just wondering if I should trust my dodgy workmanship or whether I should re do the job. I don't really want to find out the hard way.

One day I'll do one of these jobs without stuffing something up..

CB500/550 / Does anyone know a good auto electrician?
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:13:49 PM »
I didn't want it to have to come to this but I've been having electrical issues for the last six months and am sick of having to deal with them piecemeal    so I've decided it's tome for someone else to have a look. My headlight won't switch off and my indicators  give me grief sporadically. It's all just too annoying and I'm sick of fiddling around with connections and fuses and that f##king god damned awful switchgear. I'm in London but am happy to take the bike out of the city if anyone knows anyone decent who may be able to look at it.

I realise this goes against the spirit of the site but I am really am tired of trying to solve the same problems over and over again :-\

I finally got it done this afternoon, in a cold garage as the sun was beating down outside.

I ended up drilling out the old screw, then re drilling the bolt that holds the horn button in place and replacing the screw with a larger one. What a nightmare, whoever designed that set up should be made to fix one of those things thirty years after it was made to see how difficult it is.

It was pretty satisfying to get it working again though. I just gotta sort out my headlight switching between hi and lo now, after all the exploratory surgery I've just done that should be a piece of cake.

Thanks man, I'm still having trouble getting the tiny screw from the pa button itself out, seems to have seized in there. The photos are a big help though, cheers!

Anyone got any experience with these?

Seems particularly difficult to put back together once it's been taken apart, but maybe (likely) I'm doing it all wrong. I'm a wee bit confused as to where the spring's supposed to sit and how it's all supposed to go back together. Cheers ???

Hey!

I'm still looking for new bars, I wonder if anyone has measurements for what the stock cb550 bars were. I've measured mine and can't seem to find anything with a similar rise.

All I've found is these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CB750-CB550-CB360-KZ650-XV750-CX-SuperBike-Handlebars-/380317979931?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588cb7d51b

If anyone has any ideas I'd be very gratefull

Ta

It must be 1978 as it was registered in Jan' '79. My switch wires travel inside the bars and I'd kind of like to keep them that way. Would it be possible to drill the bars to feed wires through?

Am I right in thinking that these would be a match? AND are cb400 bars compatible?

Hopefully this hasn't been covered ad nauseum, I try to look at other postings before starting a new topic..

Anyway, my lovely 1979 550F and I had a confrontation with a recovery truck today, and we came out slightly worse for wear, although I was pretty amazed at what little damage was actually done. It was right at the end of a 180 mile round trip from London down to Hastings and through Brighton back up to the smoke. I got caught out by the 5:30 rush in Brixton. (I'm used to New Zealand roads)

I do have a fairly badly bent set of bars though, and I've scoured ebay and David Slver etc but without any luck. Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to pick up a new set. Would it be possible to bend these back into shape? I know it's hard to tell without seeing a photo but the left bar is bent about 35 degrees back towards the seat. I just wonder if it'd be possible to straighten it out. Anyone ever tried this??

CB500/550 / Re: Failing Headlight Dip on a CB550f
« on: October 19, 2010, 07:44:50 PM »
Thanks man, no luck yet though

OK, I put standard value fuses back in, nothing changed. I then checked the bulb which looked fine, but I removed and replaced it anyway. At some stage someone's replaced the standard fitting bulb with a modern three pronged halogen bulb like the one below (far left), the wiring looks to be original although it's hard to tell. The park lights and low beam are running off a seperate bulb located below the main light so they're completely seperate.

Am I right in thinking that this has happened because of the non standard value fuses that were installed previously? Something somewhere has obviously bitten the dust but I have no idea what it'd be, I doubt very much that it's the switch itself as it was working fine a few months ago and has been used little since then.

Ah, frustration...
