Title: Final reduction gearing
Post by: Crispy on March 29, 2020, 02:56:12 PM
I'm about to try and order new chain and sprockets for my 71 K1, just unsure what to get. The sprockets that I have taken off the bike were 17 & 48 tooth all the technical data suggests 18 & 48 , any advice on what to get? dont want to get the wrong thing and smash my crankcase  :-\

Is it definitely a K1 motor? Reason I ask, the 750F1 had 17/48 because Honda altered the internal gearing to give closer ratios and quicker acceleration. If it is a K1 motor then somebody has probably done it to make it accelerate quicker or maybe pull a sidecar.

It was the 16 tooth Honda upgraded because of chain breakage(to 17 tooth)

I have 17 and 48 on my K1's.
Saying that I should think 16 will be OK if you don't neglect chain maintenance as modern chains are far better.

Thanks guys, yes it's definitely a K1 motor,  I'll stick with what I've taken off then 17, 48 just wanted to be sure , I knew I had read somewhere that Honda had changed the gearing to prevent chain/case damage just didn't know what from or to !  :)
