Title: Draconian rules on other forums
Post by: AshimotoK0 on July 27, 2023, 11:02:28 AM
I am a member of a UK Vintage Radio forum ... here is the content of one of their forum rules postings.  ;D

Illiterate, lazily typed and incomprehensible posts.
Has your post or thread disappeared?

Due to lack of time (and patience) we are just deleting rather than editing posts and threads which would require too much work to turn into comprehensible English, or in some other way do not comply with the forum rules.

So if your thread or post has vanished, first check that it doesn't violate any of the forum rules. Yes, that means you need to read the rules (something which many new members don't seem to bother to do).

Then ask yourself if it was written in a clear standard of English with proper punctuation, sentences, paragraphs, reasonable spelling, no txt type abbreviations, mostly in the default font, not all in CAPITAL LETTERS etc.

Increasingly common problems are everything in lower case, streams of exclamation marks, streams of morse-style dots and dashes, no punctuation and ridiculously incorrect punctuation. "I have" can be abbreviated to "I've", as is common practice, but it's not "ive", i,ve" or "I,ve". Similarly "I'll" (I will) is not "i,ll", "I,ll" or "ill". The latter means you need to see a doctor.

We try to keep the forum looking reasonably intelligent, rather than appearing to be populated by a bunch of illiterates and lazy typers who think that what passes on other forums, Facebook, text messages, chat rooms and so on is acceptable here. A common excuse is "But I use a mobile device", well so what? Mobile devices can do proper punctuation, capital letters etc., so it's a pretty lame excuse.

We don't expect 100% perfect spelling and everyone's guilty of at least the occasional spelling error. Same can be said for punctuation, but when entire posts are plagued throughout with illiteracy and/or laziness the situation becomes intolerable.

Please remember that many of our members do not have English as their first language. To them, illiterate posts are totally meaningless. Even the moderators not infrequently find it impossible to decipher some posts.

Thank you,

Paul and the moderator team.

I don't think you should have posted all of that text in italics, Ash.

I did it as a Deltarider type 'test' to see if anyone spotted it  :D

They kicked my wife Cathy off there a few months ago because she posted an automotive related post (on my behalf  :-[) ... which is now apparently against their rules. I then joined to ask my own questions but they soon detected we were both using the same computer, so they cancelled my membership too.  Cathy then pleaded ignorance about the fact you can't post anything automotive and they reluctantly re-instated her membership. It's a real shame because if anyone in the UK could  answer a complex automotive electronics question, it would be probably be a member on there.  Mind you if you have a back-porch colour burst problem on your circa 1982 Ferguson 3V23 VHS video recorder, they will welcome you with open arms.

You ought to hear them rant about any electronics based item on the 'Repair Shop', claiming that the chosen 'expert' repairer doesn't know what he's talking about.

I am no spring chicken but I guess the average demographic on there will be 75+  ;D

Rumours suggest that Roo has ten thumbs  :) and someone has swapped the letters around from querty on his keyboard  ;D

A friend of mine is significantly dyslexic, with all sort of letter combining arriving in text. Far more successful as businessman than I though.

I was kicked off a Hyundai owners site when I gave an honest review of a local main dealer that did some expensive shoddy repairs to our ex-Santa-Fe.

Soon worked out that it was connected in part with the site sponsorship!

A little bit of 'cross fertilisation' of our hobbies can be really helpful.  I had a problem with the remote key fobs on our XJ8 and couldn't get any to work - was it batteries (no) was it the fobs or the module they communicate with? They don't have little tell-tale LEDs - so I went to a friend here in Orkney who is a radio ham.  'Do you have any equipment which can detect a 433 Mhz signal' was my opening question.  He did and we stripped and cleaned both fobs and finally got all buttons working.
I wrote a piece on my web site and then the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club published it in a later magazine and I have had lots of positive feedback from members experiencing the same problems - it might even help folk on this forum - even my new Forza has keyless ignition and a button type fob!

http://www.stallard-engineering.co.uk/stories/Jaguar/XJ8%20Remote%20key%20fob.htm

I think the narrow minded folk on Cathy's forum could be shooting themselves in the foot.

Ian

We can't understand Roo because he types the way they speak in Yorkshire, I think they just invent words to sound clever, isn't working though  :) :) :)

Hahaha I was biting my tongue about some of the comments/ posts that our US Cousins come up with.......anyone who is on any of the US Bike Forums will know just what I mean......and then I decided I wasn't going to bother.

BUT this lulu came up today.....................

Forum: Honda CB750 Motorcycles 69-78

'Any tips a guy should know when replacing K2 headlight bulb for the first time?  Access etc.  I see there’s several different wattages available. 100/55, 130/90, 69/55'
