Actually, I run Denso x24ea-u

I believe that the are equivalent to  the D 8ea

A d7ea is normal for the 500

The 8s are for 400,750 etc

Mostly worked on 750 and always with them on right side of bike.

Amusing that in a original Honda 750 manual, a double page spread illustrated with exploded build diagram on RHS, picture of rear with it on RHS, also another picture installed opposite  :) LHS.

As Julie notes though, it doesn't make a difference from a clamping point of view, the spindle is "floating" and will effectively impart tensile load the same from whichever side you put it in.

I don't see as it actually makes any difference unless I am missing something as the swing arm has open ends so the wheel can
be removed anyway. Possibly a production line thing for getting a gun on the nut.

To be honest, I've seen them both sides and have had my own 400's on both sides. I don't n't think it makes a huge amount of difference though. If I had a puncture, I'd walk away and leave the bike, there's no way I'm taking a wheel off by the side of the road. The practical side of my head says right, the purist side of my head says left.

I dispute this,

My 500 has no issue

In fact, I use a harder plug than reccomended, an 8 instead of a 7 ,

I have checked the tickover mixture, and my airscrews are turned out more than normal,

I also have Boyer ignition, and run the plug gaps at 33thou,

Is that plug a D8ES, a D8ES-L or a D8EA? What is the position of your airscrews.

I myself have had D8ES-L plugs many times, recommended by mecs if you travelled at high speeds.
Nowadays - many years older - I run D7EA. I see no advantage in gaps over 0,7 mm. You can expect they will erode sooner.

If your happy to take the exhaust off every time you get a puncture put the nut left, otherwise put it on the sensible right.

Thanks for all the great tips - that bolt extractor kit only £28.99 on Amazon; seems like a bargain so I have gone for one of those. I wont try and do anything more with the bolt until I get the engine out so I can get at it properly; its going to be a fun weekend! Cheers all. Mike

100% left. Why anyone would even consider putting on the right is beyond me.

You are correct in that transaction charges are vatable. Not an issue if you are VAT registered (as we are) but another hit if you’re not.

We never took Amex (even in the days of slide-over card impression machines) as the fees were exorbitant.

I am definitely no accountant but...

The total card commission over a period (net) is then +vat? They are charging Vat on a service as such.

What I mean Steve is if we take £1000, we pay card charges on all that at point of sale. Then come Vat time, we give the inland Revenue the vat content on the £1000, about £150, against which we have paid the credit card company 1-2% already. Yes we get the added vat content on that charge back but that's it. We are paying a charge against money we are simply handling for Revenue.
