Title: New E10 petrol no good for older bikes
Post by: SteveW on March 05, 2020, 07:35:38 PM

They said the same about unleaded then E5 and now E10.  E5 should still be available at the same time but no doubt at a premium price.

It's come to something when were accepting E5 as our salvation. Any ethanol is too much ethanol.

I've been using E10 on European trips for years in my 40 year old bikes, never had an issue. I put normal fuel in when back in UK so can't comment on how it affects things when parked, but it ran ok.

Sorry, but the topic of ethanol in fuel is just as old (or new) on the continent as in the UK, it is only the last few years that made us look at alternatives because of the negative effects on (old) engines and carb rubbers.

Your not wrong Roy but those that make the decisions will not be affected one jot otherwise it wouldn't happen. The option is to mess about and remove it.

You lot probably already know this but Esso Supreme + 97 RON is ethanol free and likely to remain so for the foreseeable ...

This is directly from the Esso website................

What is the ethanol content of your fuels?

The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland.

Also you will still see that the pumps have the E5 sticker on them ....

Esso customer care advise that although the pump has an E5 sticker the fuel does not contain any Ethanol and they do not have any plans to introduce Ethanol to Supreme + 97 RON.
The E5 stickers comes from the government requirements for 5% Ethanol in standard fuel but it does not apply to Supreme + 97 RON

Thanks

Simon

Had a look at that last week and the relevant pump was clearly marked E5 so will have to buy a gallon and test it for myself.

Apparently the  E5 sticker on the Synergy Supreme+ petrol pumps was introduced to ensure Esso complies with the Government's standards on labelling of fuel labelling – see https://knowyourfuel.campaign.gov.uk/. The E5 label means the fuel could contain up to 5% renewables such as ethanol but the Esso 97 doesn't .

Great! It's a long ride from here to get across the border into Ingerland. By the time I got home the tank would be empty! 😁

But look on the bright side.

Your exhausts will be nicely heated and dried out
