Title: Suggestions for a DTRL or small side lamp please.
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on November 16, 2021, 12:24:23 PM
I have a none standard front headlamp & bowl - wasn't fussed that it had no integral sidelamp as I planned to fit some sort of LED low whattage daytime running light.

I've retro fitted quite a few on cars but I have no idea who makes them for bikes I guess there is a custom market place somewhere.

I was thinking it could be mounted somewhere under the heaadlamp - lots of room methinks.

Have a look at Paul Goffs emporium: http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/index.htm, I've used stuff from him on a couple of my bikes and my experience was fine.

Which size headlight are you using ? as these give a neat solution

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401576782136 if yours is now 7 inch diameter  (obviously the original isn't) but still look quite traditional in lens form.

I'll have to measure up but tbh I'm no fan of angel eyes - too much like a fairy light for my liking.
You have got me thinking though as I have a Polycarbonate  LED headlamp in my loft might be worth me checking if it has a basic sidelamp.

Nearest I've found so far on flea-bay are these -  first one is not too wide (3.42") it would fit between the forks under the headlamp. I've asked if they sell them individually and what the power consumption is so waiting for an answer on both options - I'll look into my loft in the morning to see if the LED unit fits my bowl - I've an idea its a strange fitting.

"I'll have to measure up but tbh I'm no fan of angel eyes - too much like a fairy light for my liking."

I don't mind either way about them, suit some better than others.

Something I do feel though is they just attract attention in main and peripheral sighting even in traffic, which is what DTRL implementation is supposed to do.

We seem to have basic core response to round eye like geometry whether we realise or not that may help in a safety aspect. If you consider what draws your eye when driving you may feel that some elements grab attention faster or in a mixed view to alert you.

If you read further down in the specifications it says 9W.

Yes it does for the first option but the round lights seem devoid of dimensions, whattage etc.

I’m going to be faced with similar issue on the Yankee 750, which I haven’t thought about yet. I usually run with dipped headlight in daytime anyway so not sure whether I need a sidelight?

Just fit a UK reflector instead of the US sealed beam, all the wiring is there for the sidelight you just need the bulbholder

As you know if It needed an MoT it would fail without a sidelight  -  I have no window in my headlight for a sidelamp my DTRL will effectively double as a sidelight - for now I've ordered a cheapish  DTRL of a type I've used before 12 watts & a tad over 2.5" square - £8.66 - they have SS fittings & alloy lamp case. Might swap it out in the future for something neater when I see one.

Well, a 7" Hella headlight (H4 + 5W) comes for under € 30,- over here...
Lower price + keeping the original appearance...  ???

Thanks Bryan, yes I’d probably swap it out just to keep it on the right side of road worthy although it’s an historic vehicle and won’t be MOT’d.

Not to worry Ted, if you manage to snag an original shell its there for you mate, you never know. ;)

Good price I've always had Austria down as expensive my wife & I paid 20 odd Euros for two bowls of soup with bread at a pavement cafe in Klagenfurt in 2014. Then again we could eat Pike-Perch up the road for the same price.lol

Found the headlight assy on Amazon though ...  ;)
I wouldn't tack some "ADV wannabe" lights on (any) bike...

My DTRL arrived today - this is my first fit as a suitable place to mount it I've used the bottom bolt that holds the indicator. / headlamp frame attaching a short bracket to get the angle right.

I have the option to hang it down from the swivel if I think it's too high - this way hides the bracket and looks okay to me. It consists of four 3W LED's so at 12 W not too bad.

The listing says 80LM/W so at 12W that’s 960 lumens.
About the same as a 60W H4 halogen.

Be careful where you point it!

On our old 4x4 I used the dimmer relay  that came with a kit so at night they dimmed automatically when you put main or dip beam on. I'm probably just using these for daytime safety.

 ;D ;D ;D

Wendy offered me an old Duvet but drew the line at that idea - obv a dust sheet - I worry it might hold damp in the winter but as it's man made fibre I should be okay!

Amendment: Wendy says it's actually a "Thow".
