Title: Whine from Speedo or Rev counter
Post by: beardylondon on November 23, 2021, 11:24:11 AM
Hi All

So I have this noise which I think is coming from the speedo or rev counter.

I recorded it, this is decelerating from 50 to 5mph and riding slowly.

I guess the cable needs lubrication, any tips?

Disconnect each one in turn - when the noise stops you have the source.

Might be a bit dangerous to use a listening stick whilst riding at 50 mph.

I had the same, it was the speedo cable, as I pulled up at a junction it stopped, if it was tacho cable it'd keep going as the engine was still turning. I cleaned and lubed up the cable and it was fine again for 12 months. Another thing I found is its cold weather that seems to get the dry cables vibrating, so this time of year.

Thanks both, I'll give it some lube.

Yep, that's the sound my speedo made on Millie the Mongrel 550. I can't remember which way round it is but if it's an OEM cable, don't lube it as the inside swells and causes more issues, or if that applies to the aftermarket cables 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Someone will remind me.... BryanJ 😆😆😆

Throttle and clutch are lined but speedo and tacho are ok the grease but not too much as it has been known to work its way up into clocks

100.000 km back I have pulled both tacho- and speedocable, cleaned them with a little kerosene and lubed them just lightly with lithium grease. Never had to do it again so far.

I did have a whine from my speedo instrument and the needle was jumping. Tried a different cable and still did it.
Changed the speedo for a different one and problem sorted.

Ok it is definitely the speedo, not tachometer. I tried lubing original cable, same. I tried a brand new cable, same. Next step to get mine refurbed, anyone have any recommendations for someone to do it?

if I were you, I'd do one more test: disconnect the cable RH side of the front wheel, to be absolutely sure. There are a lot of possible sources for resonances like mirrors etc.

I’ve messaged Peter, thanks.

It’s deffo the speedo, did you listen to the audio recording? I lent down while riding slowly and could hear it turning over.

It did it before I bought new mirrors and still does it. Noise completely stops when cable is removed.

I sent my speedo to Peter, and he fixed it and returned it quickly, and I am very happy.

Thank you all for the recommendation and I can highly recommend Peter.

Great news, Peter has mended, overhauled and serviced many many Honda clocks for us, always perfect and always a pleasure to deal with.

Your gauges are now in the care of Royal Mail Phil and they went off this morning at 9.14.

Hopefully you will see them before the weekend but I do know there are delivery problems in some parts due to staff sickness and the volume of parcels in the system.
