A few of my bikes I polished the wheel hubs and left it at that. However, on my 750K0 a few years back I followed MarkB on the Sandcast Only forum's advice and cleaned the hubs thoroughly with acetone and clear coated with Eastwood 1k Diamond clear but I was not over impressed with the finish. I came to conclusion that Vic World was correct that ideally you need a chromate conversion process on the alloy surface ( e.g. Alodine 1000 series) to make the clear coat adhere properly but ...this is nasty stuff and virtually impossible for the DIYer to obtain in the UK.
Last year my mate spotted somebody selling a 2l kit of 2k Mipa clear coat for £10 at Rufforth Autojumble .. the cheeky bugger offered the seller £5 for it on my behalf and he reluctantly sold it to me.
Anyway, I checked it out and it's what car alloy wheel guys use to clear coat and is described as 'suitable for direct application to alloy'.I tried some out last weekend on a pair of 400F hubs and pretty impressed. Its called Mipa CA with HS10 hardener. Goes on really well ...I cleaned the semi-polished surface with thinners then pure acetone.

Polished then knocked back with 1500 grit pad lubricated with pink Jizer to try to get original Honda finish. Tried to match to a NOS Honda part

I just looked in my polishing diary and i got it down to 600 with a satin mop and the lacquer didn't run. Did try a 1320 grit once with a satin mop but, the lacquer started to run mate. But, it is a close call with how thick you can spray the lacquer through the gun without making a total mess of things ;) So 1500 wet and dry is a good call mate.

Mipa paints are good. I often used their 2k black and its v.easy to spray. Never tried the clear coat but might have a go at some stage.

It's all a matter of choice really.. as I said some of my bikes are left just polished alloy .... but I personally don't like the highly polished look unless it's on a special, chopper etc. Some love it though. The main exercise here was to try to get clear to stick to alloy without using some nasty unobtanium chemical. Having said that the isocyanate in the 2k clear is pretty nasty stuff too.
Going to try the Mipa HX 2k clear on my C110 paintwork this week sometime. I will report back.

Nice finish that Ash….where were you when I rebuilt the 550 F wheels😁. If my vapour blast and ACF50 finish begins to suffer, I’ll definitely rebuild using your suggestion as the finish is exactly what I was seeking at the time.👍

How many coats of clear did you apply?
And "pink Jizer"....Found green Jizer and pink Swarfega... but no pink Jizer.

Its Jizer and its deffo PINK ;) Well the liquid is ..tin is green though.
Two coats ..tack coat then one thicker coat.

Nope never seen it, every tub bottle I’ve bought has been green inside and out.
I don’t but it anymore as it’s lost it’s potency since all the good stuff was taken out of it.

I agree its sh@te now but it's great as a degreasing lubricant for alloy cleaning.
See datasheet below its red.

I have a 'solvent' based degreaser that is water washable and is excellent stuff - pink as well....

Someone also on here asked me what equipment I used to apply the clear coat .... It was a Devilbiss SRI Prolite mini spray gun with 1.2 fluid tip setup.
I also use a Devilbiss air-fed mask as the Mipa 2K clear contains isocyanates. I know a lot of people don't bother or use a cheapo mask but there you go.

Cheers ! .. I have spent the last 8 months every Wednesday prepping and painting parts for some of my bikes. Thank the Lord I am nearly at the end of it all now.
Before some smart ar$e comments about me storing it all in a bedroom and how does the missus put up with it blah blah blah .... This is a room in a massive warehouse, which my mate 'Dodgy' Roger owns. He bought it cheap off a bloke who's wife had booted him out so he had created 'living quarters' in the building he owned a couple of years before he sold it. I can't paint at home because Cathy has bad asthma, so hence I do any painting at my mates.
This is probably 1/2 of what I have done in the 8 months. The CB250K4 is my mates tank ... I did it for him (PITFA though) 'cos he bought vinyl pinstripes for £65 from a guy in France (as did Ben Powell on here) and there were absolute sh%te .. so muggins here painted them on. The vinyl just would not follow the bulbous tank profile properly ... even Ben's dad who trained as a time-served pro-painter agreed the vinyl stripes are sh%te. Probably why Piki doesn't sell them for that model.
The mudguards on the bed were clear coated in Spraymax "2K in a can" Satin aerosol (super stuff ..pricey but you get what you pay for and one can goes a long way) and the others were clear coated with the Devilbiss gun with Mipa CX4 clear coat with about 1 part in 6 Mipa matting agent, as they are mudguards off later bikes than the CB72 and Bomber 450K0, where Honda used a glossier finish than they did in the early 1960's.
The 'Sardine' Blue/White CB250K0 tank was done all with aerosols .. RS Bikepaints base coat (fookin expensive ... should have used British Leyland Teal Blue !!) and Spraymax 2k Gloss aerosol. White was 50/50 mix of Ford Frozen white and Ford Diamond white solvent base-coat.

Some lovely looking goodies there Ash! That is a tremendous amount of man hours to get that parts to looking like that. Top job!

My winter project is to paint a 500K0 paint set in Candy Starlight Gold. I had my Candy Green K0 paintwork done by Menno and I have a NOS Candy Custom Gold tank but would really like a Starlight gold set.
Not altogether sure why ..obsession I suppose.

As a complete novice to painting with a spray gun i had a very promising result on some test pieces with the method and materials you described.
- need a bigger compressor (size does matter here)
- need to disassemble front and rear hub because already with spokes and rims
It will be more expensive
It will be more laborious
