Site Feedback / FAQ / How to... / Original or Modified?
« on: November 02, 2005, 05:50:11 PM »
I'm going to uprate my CB750F to a twin front disc, but what do you think? Should we add modern features to these bike, or as purists would say keep them original.

You need to check the wireing leading back from the point to the coils. most likely problem is bad earth.

Hi JP,

Sperex is from the Holts range of products,  its temperature range is up 650 deg/C. so should be OK, I've used Halfords' own brand for my F.

As to getting the old paint off, it's a question of finish. I completely stripped the engine, degreased the crankcases with \"Gunk\" and put them in the dishwasher, (remember to remove the gearbox bearing first ;)  ).

The barrels and head, again degreased, them treated to a blast with a Karcher presser washer. When done greased/oiled up any bits that I don't want to rust.

All the bits were the sprayed using a VHT paint.

If you want a really good finish you'll have to have them blasted, I got some quotes, and some were just wild. Many wanted the engine in one piece with all the holes and bearings covered.

Goo luck with the rebuild and welcome to the forum.

Ride Safe

John

I live in Lincolnshire so lots of hills, bends and country road, as for riding, I had a beamer until a few months ago, but sold it, running two cars and a bike was getting expensive. I also own the 1976  CB750 F that is currently featured in these articles.

 A couple of years ago it suffered from a major camshaft failure, so I decided to strip it and feature the rebuild process on this website.

Mmmmm, electrical faults are are always a problem to source.

Things to find out.

When running take a volt reading across the battery, if it is greater than 12.5 volts, chances are the it is charging and the battery is knackered. an old battery may charge fully on a mains charger but the bike can not put enough current in to re-charge.

The Haynes  manual chapter 6 has a good(ish) guide on the electrical system.

If the bike starts with a flat battery on the kickstart with the lights off, the alternator is most probalbly fine.

Have fun and let us know what the problem was when you sort it.

That all said basically make sure Pistons 1 an 4 are at TDC when the timing mark show in the first picture is aligned with the mark show in the second picture and the cam shaft is positioned as in the third picture.

Then bolt up the cam sprocket.

I 've had a look at a set of jugs and there is no way an 845cc big bore kit would do this..., (well I clearly wrong 'cos yours is :P )

Have you seen the article that admin posted about ally welding without gas. I reckon this would sort you out.

CB750 / RE:help with a squeel on take-off
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:47:20 AM »
Hi, I've got a '76 F series, that squealed really bad, turned out to be a poor oil feed to the camshaft.

;) Let's face it the cam arrangement on our steeds is the week point and it is vital that you use the correct oil and change it regularly that goes for the filter too.

If you problem is cam the only solution is to replace it, not a cheap job plus the parts art like the proverbial rocking horse s#*t.

:( If you do a filter change and there is a wisps of what looks like silver paint in the oil the cam is rapidly wearing against its seats.

Have a look in side the left and right tappet covers, you won't see the cam journals but again see flecks of metal.

That all said squealing is a classic symptom of bearing seizure, and there are several more that it could be.

Personally I would strip the engine and check all the bearings.
