CB500/550 / Black smoke and hanging idle after a full rebuild
« on: June 15, 2021, 12:51:02 AM »
Hello everyone,

So I’m encountering some issues that starts to be beyond my league. I’m still quite inexperienced and this my very first full project. I’ll try to be as thorough as possible into my set up and problems as I know you’ll ask me a lot of questions if not  ;D ;D

Symptoms
- black smoke when accelerating
- Erratic idle (I have to play with the screw all the time to get it right)I can manage to keep it steady
- Low revs sputter and strong engine brake feeling
- mid/high revs quite ok but struggle to come back down
- engine run rougher when hot

Now about the bike

Model : CB550K3
Intake : Pods K&N (I bought this bike as an unfinished project and the air box was discarded already unfortunately!)
Exhaust : 4 into 2 with a short muffler
Carbs : 069A
Main jet : 110
Idle jet : 42
Needle : aftermarket (I’ve lost one OEM so can’t fit them but if anyone got a spare 273004 I’m happy to buy it)
Needle height : 3rd from top
Float height : 23mm
Mixing screw : 1.1/2 turns was looking like the best one

Top engine rebuilt with new pistons and rings, new valve seal, valves have been lapped

Ignition
I made a DIY LifePo4 battery that seems to run ok (though no BMS on it)
Electronic ignition from David Silver
Spark advanced system with the springs a bit retighened to make sure it comes back down.
Coils : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112789241229
Spark plug caps : NGK 5K ohm
Spark plugs : NGK D7EA

Sliders don’t seem to stick and it looks like they are coming back down ok. I’ve set up the slide heights with a drill bit, the synchroniser was looking ok even though the pressure is very low. Spark plugs are very sooty but dry.

It’s a full rebuild with a lot of mods so I believe it might take me some time to get there but your help would be very appreciated. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks
Tom

CB500/550 / Boot plug for intake manifold
« on: May 05, 2021, 09:34:41 AM »
Hello everyone,

It seems like finding the usual boot plug for the intake manifold is nearly impossible unless someone is ready to wait for a month or two. What you guys are using to block the plug without risking a leak?

Thanks a lot

CB500/550 / Oil pressure switch not grounding
« on: February 04, 2021, 10:17:58 AM »
Hey everyone,

I have my oil pressure switch that is not grounding apparently. I don’t have any continuity with either the engine or the frame. So the light doesn’t go off when I turn off the engine.

The neutral switch grounds so all good on that side.

Is their any chance to unblock it?

Thanks
Tom

CB500/550 / Rubber manifold K3 & 069A
« on: February 02, 2021, 09:33:18 PM »
Hi everyone,

I tried to look for this answer everywhere but it seems I can find a straight answer, I have a 550 k3 with 069A carbs. The rubbers for the manifold are the K3’s one which means the carbs don’t seat against the rubber (I have a gap of a few mm).

Now that could create  some vacuum issues. The carbs has 2 grooves and my rubbers only 1.

If I buy a manifold rubber for a F1 would that work?

I’ve seen that the intake manifold got 2 grooves while mine has only one so I’m not sure if that would work.

Interchangeability / Slowjet for CB550F1
« on: October 16, 2020, 04:10:22 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm rebuilding my CB550 K3 which is running with Keihin 069A carbs (for 550 F1, someone changed it in the past)

The bike will have straight pipes and pods (I know not ideal but the airbox has been taken off in the past).

However, the slow jets are #38 and I can't run it with the choke OFF, it dies before (and it struggle to get up in the revs). So I guess I'll have to get #42s slow jets. I found the main jets already #110 so that should be good

My main problem is I can't find it anywhere, so I was wondering if their was any compatibility with other Keihin. I tried on Nrp-carbs.co.uk but no luck.

Please let me know your thoughts

CB500/550 / CB550 K3 custom project
« on: September 05, 2020, 08:34:42 PM »
Hello everyone,

I bought this 550 K3 in parts and putted it back together.

I’ve redone the wiring, got a spark (electronic ignition). But I guess I can have the timing wrong.

I’ve got the carbs ultrasonic cleaned, I change most of the bits inside apart of the needle. Carbs were overflowing with the float at 22mm so I putted them at 24mm (weird?!). Also those carbs are from a 550 f1 weirdly.

The engine was in 1 piece and the previous owner told me it was running.

So I’m guessing the carbs are messing around, how can I be sure some fuel is running into the engine ? Also maybe the spark is not strong enough or wrongly timed...

I’ve got a video that you’ll find below.

Let me know what your thoughts are.
Thanks

CB500/550 / Re-wiring diagram of my CB550 K3 is that correct?
« on: August 24, 2020, 10:28:10 PM »
Hello everyone,

I’m rebuilding a CB550 K3 that I bought disassembled. I’m rebuilding it slowly and I’ve just done the re-wiring for the ignition and charging system. Before I start it and maybe fry something, I wanted to submit this diagram. I don’t want to see this old lady becoming a bbq  ;)

Let me know what you think.
Best

Tom
