Title: Rear shock lower mounts
Post by: Sprocket on September 17, 2018, 09:09:50 AM
I've come to refit my shocks on the bike and noticed non-standard bolts. I checked on cmsnl diagrams. I was looking to see how many, and what washers are used - whether they are big enough to cover the entire bushes, or just the centre.

I noticed there are two different types of lower shock mount. I've currently got 'eyelet' shocks and the bolt would go through two bushes side by side. When I get replacements, I'll go for the other type (clevis?) and remove the need for a pair of bushes (and the associated slop I guess!)

Could someone let me know what washers should be fitted to the eyelet style shocks please?

I thought all 350/400 rear shocks had a clevis bottom and Eyed top fittings,

They do as far as I know.

Indeed they do. These are TEC shocks but you get the drift, even by my strange sideways photo  ;D

Having suffered in the past from trying to fit without checking first, a couple of hopefully relevant points.
If you succeed in fitting shocks with lower eyelets, then surely they would not be sitting in line vertically, plus the thing that would worry me is that all the vertical loading on the lower bolt would be at one point only giving the effect of a guillotine. With the clevis type, the loading is shared equally between two points on the bolt. Hope this makes sense, because I'm not an expert!

Yep, the shocks on the bike are clearly not designed for the job! They're 315mm eye to eye so god knows what they do fit but I'm busy looking at replacements now. Thinking either DS or Hagon are the only sensible options really.

I had Hagons fitted to my CB400/4 when I got her, they were a pain in the arse, literally, a harder back end I have never known and she skipped and jumped all over the place. I use TEC shocks on all the bikes....lovely  ;D
