I’m surprised they can’t just drill the ring in two places, and split the retaining ring with a chisel. Took me about 15 minutes to get mine out this way. It destroys the retaining ring, but if done correctly, there’s no damage to the hub or the threads and the new retaining ring screws in without issue.

You can always swap the coils over to see if the problem moves to 1 and 4

In fact I think you can swap by just moving wires, switch the yellow and blue wires over that feed the coils and also swap the HT leads. Be good for another member to confirm this method.

Yes that would work.

From memory, blue fed coil does 2 and 3 and yellow fed coil does 1 and 4

I couldn’t get mine out. I ended up drilling it and splitting it. The replacement one screwed back in without any issues.

. . . first, I'll apologise for not being familiar with the Boyer kit, but when you say it comes with a rotor, is that a replacement for the spark advancer cam mechanism or is it the whole mechanism that's replaced?  I ask because if it's the former, you might want to check the springs on the spark advancer bob weights.  If one has lost some of its tension it'll flick out at inappropriate times - especially at idle - and you'll experience symptoms not dissimilar to those you're seeing.
Good luck.

Boyer replaces the spring advance retard mechanism completely and electronically advances the ignition above 4,500 rpm. Dayna S system, does utilise the mechanical advance retard system.

That sounds more like a valve sticking open and clacking shut

I encountered a similar problem on a friend's CB550 back in 1988.  In the end we binned the electronic ignition and went back to points.

Recently, I was on the verge of converting mine to Boyer, but I think this thread has put me off the idea  :)

I’m running Boyer with their micro coils, first class operation. Nice bit of kit. Would highly recommend it.

As you say, £17 to eliminate it or confirm it’s the culprit, will be worth it.

I followed this method a few years ago and no issues afterwards. Relatively cheap and available products. Bit of a faff on, but as I say, no issues since doing it.

Files coming up as empty Jon  ... anyone else had any success?

Should be good now :-)

I've tried searching for it but so far can't find the thread,  someone else may help remembering to give us a link.

Pictures of it posted and cut open afterwards as pipe was scrapped.

Thinking about this Erny over a few days, did you see a previous thread on here with very similar problem (I forget which owner) and it was a problem none of the suggestions we made got the problem.

Finally turned out to be the original exhaust of one cylinder was partially blocked within the first section. It seems it was manufactured with the pipe's inner skin deformed about 200mm down into the pipe from front entry.

If you removed the pipe from cylinder two and either put a camera down there or something to see if there's a restriction it would tell you.

Hi, yes, it was me that had the collapsed inner pipe on number 3 cylinder. However, in my case, the engine ran lovely at lower revs and struggled at higher revs, which would fit with a partially blocked exhaust.

Yup, I’ve just put a Michelin tube in my rear wheel, after a cheap, thin, Made in China one decided to have a pin hole for no reason.
