I picked up a Honda CB550 engine from Ebay a few weeks ago that turns / not sized so the guy said didn't pay a great deal for it (£209.00) It is from a P reg bike that has covered about 32 K  this is a project as I never rebuilt a engine so its a vertical learning curve  ??? for me, I have so far just put it into storage so filled the engine with oil & bores with diesel Did notice however that all of the plugs where F T tight :o  & 2 of the plugs seems to have been cross threaded (the other 2 are perfect though) Can the damaged threads be repaired via welding new material ? I take it the only other way would be a heli coil type repair?

What would you recommend and would you know anyone that does this type of repair ?

I just want to see if I can do this as I be over the moon and it would be a great achievement for me & I would then know what's been done to the bike over all . Also it would certainly make Muttley 🐕 look better as the engine paint is looking tired and is the wrong colour. 

Muttley will never be concourse as I enjoy riding it to much done well this year so far covered nearly 700 miles over the moors & the dales of Yorkshire  8)

Helicoil type is only way to repair plug threads, there were some US PRO repair kits on fleabay i used on a members 400/350 head but you have to buy a kit per hole as though there are 4 inserts they are 4 different lengths

I'd try and run a tap down them first Nigel, if possible start at the bottom eg from the combustion chamber. I've salvaged a couple with cross threads, it depends on how badly the threads are chewed up and how far down they got the plug before they realised. Starting at the bottom means it's centred as it reaches the damaged threads, otherwise you may make the damage worse.

A Time-Sert is best for heads, helicoils are ok and I've done quite a few over the years with great success but there is always a chance the insert will come out with the plug at some point. If going Helicoil way insert it with thread lock as security.

Any small engineering place should be able to repair the head.

I agree with Oddjob, i had two damaged threads.  I ran a tap through one, from the cylinder end and it fixed it. It didnt fix the other so i had to use a Time-Sert. It did the trick, all good so far.

Thank you both very much for the advice I would have 1st tried as you suggested start with a tap from the bottom / inside as its the only chance of getting correct angel and hopefully save the thread I think one might be salvageable but the other had quite a lot of aluminium bits on the tread, So where see when we strip the engine down this winter.
Ken I not heard of this option "Time-Sert" before but if its made by Wurth it must be good as they have a good reputation in the automotive world. Thank you for the link too .
Hopefully it's the only damage to the engine and that the rest of it is ok other that then std replacement parts needed to rebuild one.  So fingers crossed for the rest of it.

No experience with these either, only used helicoils. That video is a good simple explanation of how to. Looks substantial.

I couldnt watch him/that for long although the subject matter was interesting the American way of saying the same thing over and over is so tedious I got as far as 7 mins and had to mute it then another 2 and that was me.

Why would you use 4 words when 12 will do just as well................. ::) ??? :-\

You can just skim to the results, however I was impressed by his methods, anyone who can spend so much time drilling and tapping that many holes has to be admired.

However one thing that he did miss was that the results would be skewed by the bolts, some of the inserts were so strong the bolts snapped and he used that figure to show how strong the insert was when it fact that's how strong the bolt was. I also liked the fact he did a corrosion test to check on how they stood up to a hostile environment.  A cylinder head I would classify as hostile.

Seen that guy before and I agree, think it is his voice that drives me mad....
