CB350/400 / Lacquer?
« on: May 15, 2020, 04:23:01 PM »
Hurrah! Finally got the tank finished with decals and lacquer and fitted to the bike this afternoon Filled up with petrol and...BUGGER!
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I used acrylic paint and lacquer - is this a known problem and if so, what type of lacquer is petrol proof?
All advice/tales of similar woe welcome :-)

Interesting set of pics and write up, looks good. At the risk of sounding "picky", is it a trick of the camera on pic. No.13, or are your rear shox a bit on the long side? In the photo, even with the bike on its centre stand, it looks as though both wheels are still in contact with the ground. Having been down this road myself, it gave all manner of problems, so much so that they were sent back for a refund while the old ones were refitted until I managed to locate a pair which were a perfect copy and the correct length. I hope I'm wrong! Regards, Mick.
They are the correct replacements from DS Mick. The bike is on its side-stand in picture 13, hence both wheels on the ground. It's on the centre stand in Pic.12 (offside) and it does indeed look like the rear wheel is touching, so I guess it's an oddity of the lens/angle combination. The rear wheel is definitely clear of the ground when it's on the centre-stand.

It all got put back together and delivered back to me 26th February this year, minus a misplaced kick-start lever and mirrors. The paint work was the worse for having been stored/knocked about/trod-on over the previous 25 odd years and the off-side panel had cracked through at the front grommet mount, so off they came and were stripped, sanded, repaired and re-sprayed. The kick-start lever was found and fitted and a new pair of mirrors installed. Also had to re-fit the rear brake pedal to clear the collector box and replaced the original plug caps. Just waiting for the delivery of the decals and a clear-coat and we should be there.

Meanwhile, first day of running it in and my neighbour turned up with one as well!

Finally, a couple of years ago, I managed to persuade Mark at South City Garage to put it all together again, his time in exchange for the C90 and spare engine, and the CB550K and on condition that he could fit it in between his other (paid for) restoration work. The first year was spent re-powder coating the black bits and auditing the four boxes of bits to see what was missing or needed replacing.

Hi All,

Courtesy of the lock-down and getting truly bored, the Good Lady Wife decided to sort some boxes of old photographs out and lo and behold, turned up some pictures of my 400F the day after I picked it up in September 1995 and installed it at a local indoor kart circuit where I worked and was fortunate to be given storage space.

Flushed with enthusiasm, I stripped it to the last nut and bolt and got the relevant frame bits powder-coated and re-sprayed the tank and panels. DS seat and exhaust system was purchased in readiness for the rebuild to be taken at a careful, leisurely pace.

Unfortunately, the kart circuit lost it's lease due to redevelopment, the bike had to come home and be stored piecemeal all around the house, minus the exhaust silencer which had apparently been 'liberated' from my storage area! Then life, a divorce and second marriage sort of put it all on the back-burner and in a flash, 23 years had passed!

CB350/400 / 400F decal measurements
« on: March 27, 2020, 11:46:23 AM »
Good Day to you all, hope everybody is well.

I have an offer of 'Material only cost' on producing a set of decals for my 76 400F as long as I supply the artwork. No probs there as I'm a commercial artist by trade, but what I need is to confirm the dimensions to make sure they get cut to the correct size.

Has anybody got an original tank/side panel that they can measure for me and give me the dimensions 'A' and 'B' as per the attached?

As an aside, does anybody know what the big loop on the foot-rest mount is there for?
It's clear on Nurse Julie's photo.

SORTED!

It seems we simply missed the pedal/shaft alignment dots :o
Re-assembled as per the set-up instructions and it all works as it should.

Once again, many thanks to all who helped with suggestions and piccys  :)

Thanks All.
Compared to NJ's original, mine looks to be set too low. I'll re-set the pedal/linkage and see if that gives me the clearance.

Thanks Nurse Julie, if you are active in the current Corvid 19 scenario, thank you and keep safe :-)

CB350/400 / Brake pedal fouling collector box

Well, here's one I didn't expect.

Prior to a 250 mile nuts'n'bolts check, I had slackened off the rear brake operating lever as, when the good lady wife was aboard, the rear was binding (I presume from the extra weight compressing the shocks etc). All was fine, put a few more gentle miles on the rebuilt engine and back to my man it went for said torque-checking.

Collected it today (before we come under martial-law and start shooting curfew-breakers) and gave it a few harder miles (which required harder braking) and found that the rear brake pedal had a distinct detent in its travel with a correspondingly exciting extension of stopping distance. Safely home and a closer inspection reveals that the pedal toe guard is catching the collector box and then pushing past it to apply full braking (see photo)

Now, I did not assemble the machine, so my question to all you stars who have is:
If I slacken all the exhaust assembly bolts, will there be enough movement/adjustment available to move the collector box a few mill in-board or do I need to apply brute-force and crank the brake lever out some? I do recall hearing that these systems are a bit fiddly to get lined up.

And yes, I know I have been cheap and powder-coated the levers rather than re-chroming them, but I want use it, not peruse it and I feel it was a contemporary cosmetic solution.

So, 150 miles since the re-build and the 400 is back in the shop to sort a small oil seepage from the head gasket and a general nuts'n'bolts check. Then it's just the kick-start lever fitting, side panel repair and overall re-spray in the correct red (with decals) and it should be good to go and self-isolate on :-)

These 400/4s are like buses. Waited 25 years for one and another arrives straight after  ;)

Hi Steve.

It's run by the East Berks Section of the AJS & Matchless Owners Club, who meet at Burnham (Bucks) Cricket Club twice a month ( http://www.amoc-eastberks.co.uk/about.php  ). Once a year they run an open evening and usually end up with 100+ bikes of all ages, scarcity and rarity. Beer and food are available from the club-house and its just a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours on a summer's evening.

This year's 'Burnham Bike Night' is scheduled for 6th July.

You can't rush a good thing 😁😁😁 Yes, so if it was registered March 77, it's an 76 manufacture F model so Light Ruby Red is correct. Will it all be finished for the road this spring / summer do you think?
Edit... If you need the tank and side panel decals, our forum sponsor Diego ( Red Ice Decals or Piki as he's known on the forum) will supply at a very good price if you contact him direct.
Yup, hope to get it re-sprayed and badged as soon as funds and time allow. It's road legal now so I can be running in the engine re-build etc as I go. We have a nice local bike meet at Burnham Cricket Club every June and 400/4s have been noticeably absent the past three years  ;)
