Okay it unlikely to be happening until next spring but am looking for ideas. The light blue of my existing tank & side panels is all wrong with my blue frame and gold wheels. Wendy thinks it should be a dark blue or black metallic. I'm still considering a dark blue based chain mail transfer dip. I'm trying to think outside the box.
-
Oddjob I never know when you are joking on here. Have you forgotten I have gold rims?
-
Prussian Blue sounds OK. If you really want to go outside the box go for Gold tank and side panels to link with the wheels. Gold chain mail if you must! 😎

Hi Ted,
This is what I did years ago on my last 400/4 - it's a Ford metallic black from the late 90's. A kind of a salute to Velocettes but with the Honda Wings from GB500TT. I still have the tank and side panels in case I want an occasional change on my latest 400.

The black looks neat orcadian. Wonder if there is a computer programme where you can see what your schemes might look like?
-
I had a metallic black 500 back in 76, the man that at the time sprayed all the co-op funeral cars that got damaged did mine and he had to mix the paint as it didnt exist then

Back in 1986 I did my CB250RS like this, black wheels, hubs and spokes, and non standard dark blue tank and coachwork. A lot of people liked it. ;D
-
Certainly looks different all pretty much black. I think it was a period thing as my chrome chain guard has been painted matt black many years ago.
-
Looking through 400 four photos, and realise it's quite a task to find any schemes that you'd say "yes, they've nailed that" over and above the standard paint from Honda.
It's a tank shape that has a form and simplicity that stands out for those attributes, not taking much graphics and stripes easily. Often just looks uncomfortable, with most seeming to detract from original elegant simplicity.
Some colour input from other bikes that may attract you Ted

The red example leaves alone the tank form in side view (it's signature shape) while using more CBX colours and centre stripe, along with gold pinstripe accents that could go with your wheels, but very thin though.
The gold example fits in with the colour contrast you've already got between frame and wheel finishes, and so doesn't compete with a simple two colour contrast (gold/yellow and blue opposing each other in colour terms) in overall terms.
Another
[attachimg=1]
More towards one of the original honda colours with a graphics twist in neutral black, possibly satin finish to acentuate the gloss frame finish.
Also

Similar to above but on a 400 this time.

Wendy thinks red & greens are a no-no but she is suggesting metallic black or a deep metallic blue. Her favourite colour is purple so not sure why that has not been at least hinted at.
I've plenty of time to look at ideas including some Hydrographic options there are a couple of places near me one in BoT & another in Nottm that do them.
-
A Honda colour on the 550 was Boss Maroon Mettalic similar to the old Ford purple velvet, i have a nos tank in that colour if you want a pic
-
This is probably a bit out of left field and difficult to get as it is an Aussie Paint Company but the colour is awesome and not too far rmoved from Varnish Blue..
Would go really well with the Gold wheels too. There are other Candy Paint suppliers wwho could get you what you want but this Candy paint system is as easy as it gets.

I looked at the Youtube film... that is not candy paint.
Ok, you can write whatever you want on the paint bucket but this is a simple 1 stage metallic blue paint.

Agree totally, a Candy scheme is almost a clear coat with colour in it applied usually over a light metallic base coat most common silver or gold. The effect is for the colour to be translucent. Cant see how applying over 3 thick coats of paint on a plain black base coat could be classed as Candy
-
Maybe do a little more than look at the youtube clip and have a look at the company... it expalins their system... and it is FAR from Just being a simple Single stage metallic paint job...
I know full well the "true" methodology of Traditional Candy Paint but this system gives excellent results (see some of their examples) and simple blending in case of damage... not something you can do with traditional candy paint (well most painters cant)
Other than that.... It was a COLOUR Suggestion... as per the Subject of the Thread.

My brother Paul saw my bike on Friday for the first time in about 4 months - he was very taken with the powder coating job on my wheel hubs it's a pseudo chrome finish.
He thinks matching powder coated chrome silver tank or the same paint codes as my Gold wheels for tank & side panels.
I was leaning towards a midnight blue metallic - now I'm in doubt again!!
-
I'm going to go with Blue I think gone off the transfer chain mail dip/wrap ideas - not sure if the same colour as the frame as I have the RAL code or to go for a darker blue but 90% decided on blue (this week).lol
My mate is a retired colour chemist he thinks a Cobalt Blue mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
Tonight I loosly fitted the light blue fuel tank & side panel to see how bad the original parts would look against the new frame colour & gold alloy wheels - not as bad as I thought it would look.
Whats the view here - please do not be too harsh but be honest please?

Doesn't look too bad at all to me, difficult as you already comment, to visualise changes easily.
Reminds me a little of this, which I always liked. Also Gauloise when they sponsored in GP racing.

If you take a side on picture like your one above, both sides, then anyone with image edit skills should be able to show colours different to that one. It's easy to sample the colour of tank, and edit just that colour for you as you asked before about.
-
That doesn't look bad at all Ted. My personal preference would be to have the tank and panels in the same colour you have done the frame, I think that would look stunning.

Agreed. 👍
-
That’s something you’d have to get mocked-up as I’m not sure how those decals would look on a dark blue background?

I would get Piki to make a set in gold, to match the wheels.
-
Tricky question, Ted. I’d be satisfied with the original blue, but agree with Julie that a darker blue matched to the frame would probably look more ‘complete’.
I wonder if a gold tank and panels like the 500 would look too much out of place🤔.
You could ride it for now as is while you decide and paint next winter?
-
[attachimg=1]
I'm on a tablet and can isolate it but only with basic image edit program (needs more extensive like photoshop) to make a layer, overlay onto original and change colour.
-
I agree with Julie and would go for a colour match to the frame colour but I would make it metalic to make it pop a bit otherwise it could be in danger of blending in and getting lost as one complete colour scheme.
-
Yes I too like Julie would go for a colour match with the frame, I once started a CB750F2 project and decided that it would be all red, everything red, sadly never finished it as I went overseas for work.

Excuse the child like attempt but the frame colour looks ok to me.

Everything same is too much for me, but then i always was awkward. Ted if you like it thats all that matters
-
I think the yellow would look great with the blue and gold.
-
Here's a few colours Ted. My wife used a program called GIMP to make them.

My goodness, that's so clever.
-
Do you have to wear a mask when using that program?
-
Wow, thats proper trick that. Love it.
Bit too blue for me but love the yellow, perhaps the old Yellow Mica that they painted the Triumph T595 back in the 90's. Have a look at that Ted if you're exploring yellow's. I had my LC painted that colour at one point, inbetween blow ups ;D

Wow I liked the gold tank & panels more than I thought I would - might need some blue stripes. I'll have to try Gimp without the mask of course.

Back in the 1970's when I was selling Opel Mantas I loved Ochre downside is yellows fade badly as do reds unless they are metallic.

Another gold example with stripes
[attachimg=1]
Maybe the ochre in matching the gold wheels such that it doesn't make another colourway, but in a fine satin lacquer to offset it in texture against the highlight wheel finish.
-
Alternatively, this type of detail in varying blue
[attachimg=1]
Although it always seems difficult to lay detail on a 400 four tank. They appear quite individual in their original plain form, Haven't recall of a decent example that looks better than Honda spec.
-
Thought the 400 had twin front discs?
-
Thought the 400 had twin front discs?
None of the twins (aircooled) did as far as I recall. Tasty calipers though, twin opposed piston and potent when working correctly.
-
Maybe I'm confusing it with the 400N.

How about this Ted?

It's not meant to be ridden, just stared at! I like the colour combination though. 👍
