Just another couple from the local classic gathering. Strangely, I quite like this beast of a Triumph.

That looks a good turn out for what I think of as a small cold inhospitable group of islands. 8) 8) 8)

The Orkney's being located on the outer spiral arm of Scotland somewhere close to the Arctic Circle that starts at  Hadrian's wall. ;D ;D ;D

Ford Prefect has a lot to answer for my lack of geography.

Ted,
Cold? Can be, inhospitable? - not like London thankfully but if you do get the chance to visit, then don't say 'The Orkneys' or you'll be sent back on the first available boat!
Here's a little taster of the full two day Show this year:

There will be a professionally produced DVD available later in the year for you to buy at a special rate - one for the price of two!

Looks like an very interesting day out - something for everyone. Are the costumes in the Youtube clip relating to Orkney?

Hi Matt,
If you mean those very decorated costumes, then yes they are for the annual 'Festival of the Horse' and boys ploughing match which takes place each year in South Ronaldsay.  The ploughs are miniature ones often made by fathers, grandfathers and uncles and they are used on the Sands of Wright. That's another great day out.  Lots of stuff going on up here in the 'frozen North'

Why can't you say The Orkneys Ian? Some sort of local thing?

Hi Ken,
It's one of those things that annoy Orcadians - they are the Orkney Islands or just Orkney - exactly the same with Shetland.  Even incites folk to write letters to the 'Orcadian' newspaper now and then. Johnny might be along with a more detailed explanation, he's a proper Orcadian - I'm only from 'Ull in Yorkshire tha knows but I try to respect their wishes.

Yes Ian, and also you have to roll your rrrrr,s 🤣🤣 we just snigger when it becomes “Okney”!  I think it’s because Orkney is a shortened version of the Orkney Islands. There is no Orkneys Plural, maybe because Orkney is the entire group of 69 or 70 Islands with the main part being referred to as the mainland. Do visit we are hospitable and we haven’t ate anyone for a long while! 🤣🤣🤣

So would you be right to refer to them on the island as the Orkney group? or would they start to sharpen knives?

You can call us whatever you like Ken, we're nearly all deaf from riding noisy bikes in the strong wind!
Joking aside, it would be really great if a group of you Forum folk came for a visit sometime - we can take you around some very tasty toy cupboards, lovely scenery, quiet roads and show you what civilisation is really like.  Just be careful around that next bend - there could be a herd of kye (cows) being moved from one field to another or just a slick of shite to slide on.

I've been to Orkney and had a great holiday. Quiet roads, lots of ancient sites if you like that sort of thing and friendly people.
Even flew out to Westray and Papa Westray for the shortest scheduled flight in the world.

Didn't get eaten and came back in one piece. 😁

I know what you mean about Beemers, I always said that when I give up motorcycling, I might buy a BMW.  Anyway Mick, if you PM me I'll arrange a meet up with yer man - or if he wants a break from unpacking boxes and they can get to the Dounby Show tomorrow (10th) I'll be there with the 550 F1 and our Clubman Estate - near the Orkney Vintage Club caravan.

Best handling car I have ever owned was a BMW 325 SE they make you grow horns - every journey can end up like road racing. ;D ;D ;D

Ian

When you state as above "when I give up motorcycling" that infers you mean a BMW that is not a 2 wheeler unless you do not count them as true motor cycles?

Hi Mick,
Yes,
Johnny and I were at the event yesterday - it's part of the annual Science Festival - just another excuse for a ride and a yarn with mates and Joe (and Josephine) Public) and have a bite to eat from the traders.  Pity they didn't ask who it belonged to and have a natter!
I'm still on the trail of finding what's up with these forks - stripped and checked not long after it took to the road.  Various grades and amounts of oil but still no improvement.  Springs were within spec lengthwise but couldn't be sure of poundage (in case they were aftermarket for a heavy guy - better than saying fat b'stard) so got a new genuine pair from DS - still the same!
I actually put and old and a new on a long threaded rod and wound nuts on the ends to  see if  one compressed more than the other - hardly any difference!

Will wait now til Winter and do further checking - it's quite rideable and safe but patters on all but the smoothest surfaces.

Ian
