Title: 400/4 Taiwan jet sets
Post by: Cappodimonte on September 16, 2022, 08:03:31 PM
Started to rebuild the carbs on the 400/4 using a complete rebuild set bought from Taiwan via Fleabay, put the needle jet for the float in and fixed in the float which to my surprise was at 21mm. That was the lowest point of the float to the carb body at it’s farthest it was 45mm and looking like a Tom tit on a pump handle.I’m going to search for the old needle jet to see if the replacement is too long which from the position of the float is the only thing that could be viable.
Anyone out there had this problem or am I unique ?

The brassware in the new sets are of dubious quality, use the old brass if you can and clean them using an ultrasonic cleaner.

Had all the jets out and micrometered them up to the originals finding no difference in the length, had another look at the floats, I now have to apologise to the Taiwanese geezer who made the items up because the fault was entirely mine, discovering that I’d put the float in the wrong way up hence totally out of measurement.
You may now take the Mickey all you want, I have already looked in the mirror and told myself off and beaten myself with the horse whip.
😱👍

It's not length etc that's wrong with them, it's the quality of the product. Float needles for instance can have the < part off centre and it will never stop petrol that way. Drillings are not the exact size etc.

Ho Hum, Now, I have never removed the carbs from my 400 in all the time I’ve owned her (45 years) so in doing a total stripdown of everything including the carbs which I have just replaced the entire jets inside the carbs themselves along with the slider needles. You can imagine my surprise when removing needle in No4 it was a bit different to all the rest. ( See photo )
Methinks it was coming up to break time and someone was in a hurry.

Look closely at number 4 and you can see the circlip has folded, the tangs are out of shape, add in that the needle has a ring around it makes me believe it got stuck in the bore somehow, it was then forced down by the pull cable as the engine was revving and it couldn't be stopped, this bent the tangs on the circlip and pushed the circlip down the needle.

Well spotted Ken.

FWIW my bike came with a set of Keyster kits KH-0147A  (1610-377-004/044) - I fitted them - they were fine.
I have of course kept all the old parts just in case there is a problem in the future,

That must have made No4 run rich! I raised the needles in my carbs just by one groove, it started brilliant, but reeked like an old steamer.🤣

Does anyone know where I can get the small connector pipes which I think are 3mm internal diameter which fit between the carburettors for balancing purposes, knowing they’ll need to be ethanol resistant. Around here they look at you as though you have three heads.and six fingers on each hand.

Try a lawnmower shop that supplies Styhl stuff, they usually have it in stock. Some brewing shops also stock it.

Laveradoo, You Sir are a star, I went to P A Turney at Weston on the Green who had just the right internal diameter pipe to slip over the inter connectivity pipe so I am one happy bunny. I owe you a pint.

You’re right about too much interbreeding down south Ken, luckily I’m a West Countryman 😀👍

There are some cracking rides in The Royal Forest of Dean, especially the road from Staunton to Monmouth either up or down. Roads IN the Forest can be a nightmare due to free roaming sheep and apparently Wild Boars nowadays.

Oooh yes, the boar can be vicious and the sheep have absolutely no road sense

One takes it you have traversed through The Royal Forest of Dean on occasion ? I did so in the distant past and came into close contact with sheep which caused me much aggravation and expenditure when it headbutted the front of my then car. It croaked so did my No claims👹.

Sheep up there are a bit scabby and after I’d mangled it there’s no way it’d be fit for the table and my car was wearing more of it’s wool than the sheep was👹☠️😱
