So DS are buying stuff which they don't know the specs for or even if they are suitable for the purpose intended. I think they're just to lazy to look up the specs myself, I'd like to say nobodies that stupid but we all know it happens.

CB350/400 / Re: Acceptable / normal oil consumption
« on: September 26, 2022, 12:49:23 PM »
Was following a Triumph 900 the other week coming back from an oil meet. It started to smoke, I could smell oil being burnt. I signaled him to pull over and his left leg up to the knee was saturated in oil, it was pouring out of the engine and forming a pool on the floor. He'd only had the bike a month so he was understandably a little upset. Turns out one of the half moon shaped rubbers sealing the camcover to the head, where the cams would be, had popped out. We managed to force it back in enough that he could get home.

The next week he turns up and explains the breather pipe had been fitted wrong by the PO and instead of being fed to the bottom of the airbox they'd fitted it to a blank on the airbox. This compressed the cases so much the seal popped out.

This got me wondering, could the engine be forcing oil back into the airfilter via the recycling system fitted to the 400, this causes the smoke from the exhaust. Which leads you to think it must be head related when in fact it could be something else, like a failed ring allowing compression into the crankcase.

Have you checked the airfilter to see if it looks really wet with oil?

I think it has to be a specified thickness to stop the shaft floating. I'll have a look to see if I got any with the spare engines I bought.

Yep, found 2, I'll pop one in the post for you Gary.

I would suggest checking the gear change mechanism behind the clutch basket, there are 2 hooks which catch the pins in the end of the gear selector drum, one pulls the pins and one pushes them. I suspect the pull one could be rounded off or be bent out of alignment. Also check the pins for any signs of damage just in case.

The kick we would probably describe as clutch snatch, this could be anything from a distorted clutch disc, a worm drive fault in the sprocket cover or even a broken clutch push rod, you’ll need to check everything as you take it apart. I’d also suggest checking the clutch basket to see if the large drive gear on the back has started to come loose or even if the internal damper rubbers are perished, see if you can find any movement in the gear whilst holding the basket firmly.

Seem to recall Julie sells the fuse holder, Graham had some made a few years ago.

Same as the 500, for pressure equalisation I believe.

Looks like the side stand is hitting the No2 exhaust pipe and there's a drain hose incorrectly routed if that's staining on the same pipe. Best remedy both of those before they become a bigger problem.

Ever visited Carsington Water near Matlock Bath? recommend it, really nice. Take yer trunks and have a go at paddle boarding  ;D ;D

No, TBH I'd forgotten about that little thing. It's a cover that goes across the entire top of the box, has a small curled over section. I believe it was installed to reduce induction roar.

CMS haven't got that correct parts book for the European model, not sure where there will be one.

They come up occasionally on Ebay.

Disconnect it Dave and just vent it to air near the main stand. If for any reason the engine starts to vomit out it's oil, and I've had this when a set of rings broke and the compression went past the piston and put the crankcase under compression, it won't flood the airbox.

Most likely float stuck and flooding backwards. Check the pipes coming out of the float bowls aren't blocked/trapped. I'd also check the float bowl drain pipes, the brass ones, if those block the fuel has to go somewhere and it's either into the engine or the airbox. There should be a drain on the airbox as well to stop that getting a big problem.

Is the airfilter housing vented to air, in that the engine breather no longer goes to the airbox as it does as standard?

I'd check the gear lever Ted as well, behind the part where it clamps. The 500 lever is very slightly longer than the 550 lever but they look identical, it's very easy to mix the 2 up. The 550 has a letter A stamped on the inside of that block, the 500 doesn't.

They should be 98 main and 38 slow. I suspect the PO also altered the clip position which would account for the black plugs.

The European 500 got some sort of airbox cover but I don't think it's that one. They got different carbs though as well so compensate and run much different size jets.

Can you see the carb number Dave, is it 069A or 627B?
