Title: Petrol Cap Lock
Post by: SeanFD on September 07, 2020, 09:59:33 AM
Has anyone ever taken the Petrol cap lock apart?

I want to take the wee plastic bit out so I can get it powder coated - the chrome part, not the plastic part  ;)

I have no idea how to do it - what about just buying a new one if the chrome has gone bad?

Can’t talk specifically on this lock, but to dismantle them you often have to insert the key, turn the barrel... and only then some pin / circlip / grub screw ...whatever ... makes itself known.

I was getting some new hours keys cut and asked the locksmith what he thought.

He was fiddling with it and half way through the sentence, “No idea really, just keep fiddling ... oops, there it is!”

When I asked what he did, he said, “No idea!”

His one piece of advice was that, when putting it back, to make sure it was fully seated before turning it.

This was supposed to be a budget resurrection, but the mission-creep has been considerable as has the cost. I decided to powder coat all the chrome bits as the poor man’s alternative. Not as good-as-new, but substantially better than “as-was”.

Powder coat does not stick to chrome very well. De chrome the parts first by reverse plating  ;)
