Project Board / Re: "Second Chance" Project

Just thought I would update you all on this project, its been a while.

6/5/20
This project really has taken its time, believe it or not it is still not on the road, technically it is finished, all the chroming is finished etc so ready to show.
I have not updated all the small bits I have done as my mental health took a bit of a dive again and I just couldn't be arsed to be honest. I did take it up and down the road a few times but the brakes were just about non existent so I have put new brake pads and shoes on it but not ridden it on the road to test if all is OK.
I managed to find myself a job over the last 2 years but unfortunately I was let go a week before lockdown. :( No Furlough and can't claim benefits as I hadn't worked long enough. :( Just great for a mental health boost!
Anyways, I slightly digress, have a look at the link for a quick walk around of the bike. I am very happy with it so that's all that counts.  ;D

What he doesnt show you is the god awful mess the baking soda will make to the general area around you... lol
And if you try to hose it in it will kill pretty much anything... grass, plants etc... probably not weeds though... they seem to thrive on stuff that kills everything else.

Yup it does make a hell of a mess and it does use a lot of baking soda. I tried to clean my engine cases with it, whilst it did work to a degree it was very slow and wasted a lot of soda. But I do disagree with you on it killing grass etc. It just washes away with water and it doesn't kill us humans in cooking so why would it kill grass?

if I was you I would swap the complete unit as you have suggested less things to go wrong just watch for buckled clutch plates and check they all within specified tolerance

Thanks Steff, I have checked the plates and springs and are all still within tolerance.

Thanks for the reply Triggs. Just to clarify my position, the basket is complete with plates, washers etc and the basket fits on the bikes splines, so yes it will fit, I was just worried if the design difference would make any issues with the clutch operation, bear in mind what I know about bike maintenance etc can be written in large letters on the back of a postage stamp!  ??? :o

OK Ladles and Jelly spoons today's task if you care to accept it is the identification of the clutch basket I have just purchased.
I bought a complete clutch basket from the bay of fleas and it seems to be different to the one in my bike. The one on the right of the pics are from my bike and the ones on the left are the replacement ones. So my question is simply this.....Is it just a straight swap or am I heading for disaster if I fit the new one?

OK, so have you informed DVLA that it has been substantially modified?

No this is the bikes 3rd incarnation as a chop, so I have no idea what the previous owners have done.  ???

Unless you can prove it was all done over 30 years ago, I would say yours has been substantially modified and looks like it should be on a Q plate therefore needs yearly MOT's still. I would like to be proved wrong though.

It is registered as a 1976 so no Q plate.

So my bike has no modification to the engine and the suspension has been removed so less parts to go wrong, so can this be classed for MOT exemption?  :o :-\

I have the large diameter hardened washer, I took it off to show a clearer picture of the cogs.
I'm a bit reluctant to spend over £40 on the roller kit to find out it is not the problem.  :(

CB750 / Starter clutch problem.
« on: May 11, 2019, 09:44:29 PM »
Hello to you my learned colleagues, I had a problem with the starter clutch and after stripping found the springs were completely knackered. I replaced them with new springs and all was good. The bike has stood for about 3 years since then due to the build. Everything is all back together again and I recently tried to get the engine running again. The clutch was working as it should for quite a few spins then suddenly it went back to sounding like a bag of spanners again and refused to turn over the engine. I have stripped it again and can't visibly see or feel anything wrong with the clutch assembly but I did find the large clutch sprocket to be floating on the spindle. It engages as it should but this float is now worrying me, should there be some sort of spacer there to stop this floating? I hope the pictures explain my problem better.

Heart attack at 61 is worrying. Looks like I have two years left, better get some more money spent on the bikes. ;D

I had my heart attack at 57, one stent later and I am still thankfully here!

How can he be 59 when he was born 30th June 1957, that makes him 61???
Someone obviously couldn't add up. Yes his birth date is correct that makes him and me 61 years young.

Most impressive, that must have taken some organising, and no Ian there are no Blackburn Buccaneers flying anymore, Thunder City did operate at least one airworthy example but I think they went out of business after a Lightning that they operated crashed.

Cheers

Dennis

Well here's a did you know!

Did you know that way back in the early 90's, I had a phone call from a Mr Mike Beachyhead to do some signage for him. Whilst traveling to site with him in his posh car we got into a conversation about flying. I told him how I had been up in a microlite a few times etc, and he said that he also done a bit of flying. He didn't elaborate any further. It was only later I was to discover that Mr Beachyhead was the owner of the only two English Electric Lightnings in flying condition and about 3 Hawker Hunters. He is/was the only civilian pilot licensed to fly Lightnings. He was also the owner of Thunder City in Cape Town, South Africa where I lived at the time.
