We used to use solely Filtrare bought from Popes Suzuki dealer in Bristol cheaper than direct as he bought a full load at a time. Eventually went Castrol as use increased as they supplied the bunker bin

What Graham means, I think, is that original 500 L/H and R/H switch electrical wires are routed inside the bars via the holes but a lot of people bought cheaper undrilled bars and cut a piece out of the lower half of the switch to run the wires down the outside. When I was doing it full time I always refused to fit drilled bars as Honda genuine ones are reinforced for strength.
That circular switch IS NOT HIGH/LOW it is an ON/OFF

If you mean the circular switch it is an on/off not high/low and starting from end it is grip; indicator/horn with wires inside bars then a gap then on/off with wires outside bars

No you will need to put battery positive voltage to rhe white wire and earth the green one to power the field coil then with engine running you should get AC across each of the 3 pairs of yellow wires

Bill the only difference between the 500 and 550 sets is the clutch cover gasket

They are way easier to work on than a BSA/Norton or a Triumph all you need is a decent metric socket set; some circlip pliers and the only special tool is the rotor puller. A good manual is a must; preferably the original Honda one and a parts book helps. Look at the carb tops; if they are coffin shaped with a screw at each side it is an F; if P shaped with a screw top and bottom its a K3 with horrible PD carbs

Cylinder comes off in frame and base gasket is in top end kit so i always rekon might as well change that and base o rings. Are you sure the leak is head gasket as it is relatively common to get an oil leak from under the steel bracket at the end(s) of cam cover where a soft sealing washer should be between bracket and cover.
I did have some decent gasket sets i imported from the US if you wish i will see if i have any left

I think they mean turn the indictive clamp over so that the ht cable runs the other way through the hole. Many years ago it was explained to me that on twin outlet coils one plug sparks fromcenter to outside whilst other one sparks from outside to centr so you should swop plugs over regularly----never bothered myself though

550 with choke cable! Would it be a K3 with PD carbs? If so they are a swine to get right on standard setup never mind with the alterations you have made. I suspect bigger pilot jets may help as those carbs are set to run very lean and your mods have made it leaner, trouble is they are press in jets and not readily available. Only place i know is Sirius in Canada and they do very few sizes

If anybody can remember the Citroen GS the manufactures idea to stop squeaky brakes was to put two finger lines of Copperslip on either side of the DISC!!!! and yes it worked but they had the high pressure breaking system worked off the suspension. Apparently it stopped the dust collecting in the pad crevasses.
PLEASE NOTE I am NOT recommending this just recounting and old manufactures fix
