Other Bikes / Norton Jubilee and Navigator
« on: September 20, 2023, 08:14:46 PM »
My parents have a few old bikes in fair to poor condition, one is literally a box of bits with probably a fair bit missing.  Is there anyone on here who might be able to give me an idea as to the value of them? I can post photos if needed.

CB500/550 / Oil seal kit
« on: September 15, 2023, 01:05:00 PM »
David Silver don't do an engine oil seal kit for a 550F, is the 500 kit essentially the same but missing the blanking plug?

CB500/550 / Ash's coil fix
« on: August 29, 2023, 11:11:15 AM »
For those that have done the coil fix that Ash has detailed in Aladdinds Cave, is there a more readily available filler such as silicone that can be used?  I can't justify ordering such a large amount of high dielectric epoxy just for four holes, I've got ordinary epoxy resin if that would work?

Desperately Seeking!! / Cb550 rear wheel or hub
« on: August 19, 2023, 02:44:11 PM »
The brake lining on my 550f is cracked, I've looked at getting it relined but I think a good used wheel or hub may be a more straightforward option if I relaced it to my rim.

As much as I've searched I can't find an answer to which slot the needle clip should be in as stock, they are currently at no2 from top.

Project Board / Doms CB550F1 project
« on: August 10, 2023, 08:55:03 PM »
I decided I needed a CB550 in my like after completing (nearly) my XS650B restoration.  I found a UK 1976 cb550f1 on 32k and in relatively good condition with very little apparent rust or corrosion, it was last started in 2017 but still turns over so fingers crossed a service and strip and clean of the carbs, new plugs will get it running.  I've bought a compression tester so I can find out what kind of health the engine is in and will stick my inspection camera down the plug holes to see what it all looks like in there.

So far I have discover a few good and few not so good things.

Good-
The frame must have been painted or powder coated at one point as its far too clean bar a few knocks.  A previous owner has gone over it replacing all engine cover fastenings with stainless cap heads.

Not so good-
The gear lever looks to be from another bike, it's been over clamped in an attempt to gain a grip on the shifter splines which are a little bit chewed up.  All float bowl screws are chewed up and are a mix of length and head type, possibly the worst thing I've encountered so far is the rear wheel.  I'd noticed it was very hard to push around so stripped the rear wheel out, the hub has been dinked on the edges by a hammer or something so it was catching on the drum plate.  When I removed the plate from the hub I found very uneven wear on the shoes and lining which has also cracked in several places, new hub or a replacement lining needed.

Can anyone recommend a courier to move a cb550 from Brighton to Herefordshire? Best quote I've had so far is £180

CB500/550 / Ebay scam?
« on: August 05, 2023, 04:56:20 PM »
Just a warning to other members I think this listing on Ebay is a scam judging by the guys inability to answer my questions and his indecision of the model year.

Desperately Seeking!! / Cb550f or k
« on: August 04, 2023, 06:56:17 PM »
Hi, I'm looking for a cb550F ideally but may accept a K with the concealed filler cap (K3?),  as I want to do a few modifications to it I'm not looking for anything incredibly tidy or concourse, just not rusted to hell or beaten up tank unless cheap enough to justify it.  Let me know what you might have, cheers Dom

CB500/550 / Choosing a cb550 donor bike
« on: August 04, 2023, 08:27:30 AM »
I'm on the lookout for a 550 donor for a cafe racer build of sorts, more of a removing and storing some of the original parts for returning to original at a later stage kind of build.  I've researched some of the model differences and see that the F's have the different side covers, brake pedal and headlight bowl but are there any other things to look out for that I should be aware of? I have a preference for the concealed filler cap as I prefer the look and lines of the tank.

New Member Introductions / New member, Herefordshire
« on: August 02, 2023, 04:36:13 PM »
Hi, I've been hanging around looking on this forum for a while now so thought I'd introduce myself.   I've recently restored a 1975 Yamaha XS650B American import which I'd intended turning into a cafe racer but ended up buying an example too complete to mess about with, I found the standard looks of a standard xs really grew on me.  Hopefully I won't be torn to shreds for wanting to do this to a cb550.
