Wont lift the wheel Ted, just make the shokers harder to push down
So it's not like pre-loading at the front, I wondered if the spring tension would push the damper unit down so the swing arm was lower creating a slight increase in ride height. TBH the rear dampers seemed pretty good to me, I'll see if I get used to how it rides our local poor road surfaces.
At a glance it looks as if the exhaust will have to come off to get the bottom bolts out or is there a trick to make it simpler if I do replace them next year?
If the bike is on the centre stand then , yes the swingarm will lower slightly. When the wheel is on the ground the seat will therefore be raised slightly. The shocks will not be harder to push down because the springs haven't changed.

Originally it would have been zinc plated. Most wheel spindles rust eventually because water will find a way in and have time to do it's worst before the spindle is next removed. A thin coating of high melting point grease will delay corrosion for a while, but not forever.
The worst wheel spindle I've ever had to deal with was on a friend's Bandit 1200. He'd assembled it dry (no oil or grease!) and then ridden it all through winter (in Scotland) without much washing or cleaning. It was welded solid and wouldn't budge. He'd tried to knock it out and burred over the threaded end before he called for help. No amount of releasing oil, heat or freeze spray would move it. I had to cut it out in the end, carefully so I didn't damage the swingarm. A new spindle and spacers with a good coat of grease sorted it in the end.

Ted, the term "preload" on bike suspension is a bit of a misnomer. Increasing the preload doesn't "harden" the springs, it just lifts the bike up a set amount to put the suspension travel in a better position for the combined weight of bike and rider. That's why you increase preload when carrying a passenger.
The spring rate is set at manufacture. Different spring rates are available from specialists.
These old bikes have fairly simple suspension and damping systems, they're not as good as modern bikes at coping with bumps and potholes. A new pair of decent shocks is the only way to tell if your old ones are worn unless you got them tested by a specialist. That would probably cost as much as a new pair! 😲

I bought a dust cover from MPS years ago which is still going strong. It's made of a sort of light polyester weave and breathable. Keeps the dust off the bike in winter, job done! 👍

Should be able to mill those from solid aluminium.
They have double curvature surfaces on them ... well beyond my machining skills and to pay somebody to draw up and make them would probably be as expensive, or even more, than tracking down a used OEM set.

With your right foot on the stand lug and both of the centrestand feet on the ground, the bike should be quite stable before you start lifting. Only on level ground though!

It does that sometimes. The outer measurement is unaffected.

No lock washers on those nuts on the 400/4 . Just a flanged nut.
There are lockwashers shown in the Honda manual. Were they only fitted to the 350f? I fitted shallow nyloc nuts to my 400 because there is not enough space for a full height nut.

Ted's figure is correct. 8mm bolts on 400f. Use the lock washers as well or shallow nyloc nuts.
