This is the link to the latest update to number plate rules and regulations, interestingly more vehicles are now eligible to display the black and white plates
Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 may display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates (for example, white, silver or grey characters on a black plate). From April 2019 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1979 are also able to display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates. You must:
• haveappliedtoDVLA
• beregisteredwithinthe‘historicvehicles’taxclass.

Loads of bikes with black plates on these days...legal and illegal...loads of new harleys and triumphs etc.. I see dozens every time I go to the local bikers cafe. The good news is, its your bike and your choice...ignore the grumpy old traditionalists ;D

It's a 'rolling' change, ie, changes each year along with the Historic status registration. As long as it old enough to be registered as a VHI,(and IS registered as a VHI) it can have a black/ silver plate. But as Rob says, even owners of new bikes change to black / silver now 🙄🙄🙄

My Land Rover is from 1968 and still has it's original yellow and black number plate, as did my bike until the MOT man made me change it. From the late sixties yellow rear/white front number plates were available as well as black and white and only became compulsory in about 1973. Most people buying a new vehicle chose the 'new' type because it would have looked more modern and up to date. Black and white number plates are a bit strange looking on mid to late seventies bikes, but, having said that I have been thinking about getting one for my bike, I have never been one for the 'straight from the factory' look. If it is now allowed then why not.

Agree...I still have Yellow on my 78 T 400/4 cos I think a bike that late looks stoooopid with black / silver. All our other old Historics are a mixture of some black/ white and some yellow.

My 500/4 came with black and white plate, never changed it, never attracted comment. Did get stopped by s traffic cop once and she was busy filling out her paperwork, looked at it and was about to tick the box saying no tax or mot because she thought it was too old to need it - back in 05 this was. I was quick to say, no its taxed and tested, look at the sidecar window, theres s disk on clear display. Very noticeable that police dont like looking closely at old vehicles, too many age related exemptions for them to want to get involved in inspecting them.

I still have the original yellow/black rear plate .
its useful in the dark if you have a lights failure

My mate was driving a TA Land Rover in Manchester years ago when a young Copper pulled him over......after the usual pleasantries, he started to write out a Ticket for the L/R having no Tax Disc on display.
Fortunately (for the Copper) his Sergeant appeared and explained that MOD Vehicles were not subject to Road Fund Licence regulations.
My mate was quite gutted as he'd been looking forward to a day off work and claiming loss of pay and expenses back from the Court. LOL
