CB500/550 / Testing carb float levels with water?
« on: May 14, 2018, 04:56:18 PM »
May sound a daft question but am just rebuilding my carbs and wondered if i can test the float level using water (off bike of course !!!)

Just hate messing around with petrol all over the place

But maybe water has some different physical property from petrol that means its not feasible

Also does the level need to be about 2mm below the bowl/body joint from memory?

CB500/550 / Great service from CMSNL but I wonder
« on: May 11, 2018, 01:05:12 AM »
In a bid to fix my horrible sounding no 1 exhaust I emailed them along the lines of I bought these 2 years ago and surprised to see a baffle failure after only 2k dry miles

I have to say great service as they have replaced it at no cost but looking at their web site I have got to wondering....

They list single pipes for 2 3 and 4 cylinders but always show a single pipe for no 1 as unavailable

This has got me wondering if there was an original known manufacturing issue with no 1 and they have pulled my replacement unit from a full set which is why there is no availability of no 1 pipes

I believe DS use the same supplier as well but may be wrong

So I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of any similar problems

CB500/550 / Help with Cruzinimage carb kit
« on: May 10, 2018, 12:30:23 AM »
Help
I just received my rebuild kit and am puzzled

In the pic I can identify

3 different size main jets
Pilot jet
Air mixtutre screw and spring
Emulsion tube, needle and clip
Float valve

What I am confused about are the additional o rings as I am not sure where they should go

I guess the 4 larger ones are for the fuel inlet connectors and the two others maybe for the bowl drain screws but you only need 12 of these in total across all carbs and also why 4 of 1 and 2 of the other in each kit so now I have 16 in total across the 4 kits!!,

As to the 1 very small o ring I have not got a clue

I should ad d I have bought also fron Gerben a Viton set of O rings as well  to replace these with and he supplies exactly what I would expect so I am a bit puzzled

Can anyone enlighten me please

Recently I  have got rather interested in Compression level testing on my 500 4 mainly down to trying to diagnose some running issues.

The Technical official Honda 500 Maintenance Manual indicates a "good level" of 170 PSI and anything under 140 indicating worn rings, poor valve seating etc

So off I went with my pressure tester and got 135 PSI on all 4 pots and started to panic, why are these levels so low compared to the Honda spec given that I rebuilt this engine only 2k miles ago with new pistons and rings and honed bores and all measured up to within official Honda sizes for a standard bore (56 mm) engine. Also the engine runs well with no smoke etc indicating worn rings or anything else wrong.

So why the large discrepancy.

I think there are a number of factors at play here

1) The compression tester I used was a fairly cheap unit   but like many commonly available that has a long length of rubber hose. This significantly increases the volume of air being compressed and can drive down the readings on these small capacity cylinders as the additional volume of air is significant compared to the swept cylinder volume.

If you look at the Honda maintenance book picture the  guy there is using a rigid metal small bore pipe connected to the gauge NOT a rubber hose. Also the Honda manual says nothing as to whether this is a dry or wet test but logic would assume dry as nothing says otherwise.

There is an excellent post on the USA forum about this that end up getting very technical but a really interesting read for the highly technical amongst us.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=39971.0

2) This was a dry test so I put some oil down the bores and the readings whacked up to 175 but I think I put way too much oil in there which was why such a jump. I thin I should have added just a few small drops !!

So now to my million $ question on these 4s what would be a sensible "good" level to get when using the type of gauge easily available and thet we all use.

My experience seems to lead me to around 135 psi on a dry test and that it does not rise dramatically on a wet test with a few drops of oil would indicate a pretty good condition engine. But that said I wonder what an acceptable lower level would be to indicate a top end problem.

Be very interested in others opinions here and how this thread develops.

A) Does anyone else have and readings from their bikes that may help?

B) Does anyone know what sort of increase is OK between a dry and a wet test?

CB500/550 / Inlet manifold o rings??
« on: May 05, 2018, 07:49:27 PM »
Just on a top end rebuild and confused....

The parts manual shows o rings for the inlet manifolds to head but my K0 USA seems to have not o rings but larger seals

I have sourced a full gasket set from DS but there are no sealing rings like this in the kit but loads of o rings

Thoughts???

CB500/550 / My 500 4 is poorly
« on: April 28, 2018, 05:24:05 PM »
Help....

I have been trying to chase down a problem with my bike that started with cylinder 1 sounding like a tractor.

I have checked the exhaust and no loose baffles to be heard.

Next step was to check the plugs and oddly number 1 looks ok but the others all look a bit rich. This a bit odd as carbs have been fully rebuilt with ultrasonic cleaning and all new jets etc so not convinced I have a carb issue.

Next I checked the compression and am only getting 135 psi on all pots. Again a bit odd as she has had new pistons and rings but maybe my bore measurements were off!! On putting some oil down the bores compression climbed to 175 so that would seem to confirm a piston/ring problem. But again why would this cause this noise only from cylinder 1

I think I have come to the conclusion that I need to at least pull the head and block and check all over again.

But before I reach for the toolbox I would appreciate and ideas anyone else has having listened to the sound

As I said in the first sentence the issue is the rough sound from cylinder 1

I have posted here on YOU TUBE.

The first vid you can hear the rough sound and in the second I disconnected spark plug 1 so you can hear the difference.

CB500/550 / Compression test levels
« on: April 26, 2018, 06:11:14 PM »
Just been doing some more investigating on my odd sounding no 1 cylinder and decided to check compression. I am getting 135 psi on all 4 pots so no drastic difference on no 1 cylinder

That said are these readings a bit on the low side as the maintenance manual mention 177 psi

I should add that engine had a full rebuild 2k miles ago with new pistons and rings and I also regrouped all valves in etc

I should add that this was a “dry” test ie no oil put down bores etc

CB500/550 / Odd sounding number 1 exhaust
« on: April 18, 2018, 06:57:03 PM »
Hi
My number 1 exhaust is making not the usual sound after the winter lay up
It sounds a bit like a boom boom noise and if you hold your hand over the end of the pipe it feels as if the pressure is higher than the othe 3 cylinders

Not sure if I need to worry as the bike runs fine other than that and pulls well through rev range just this odd noise at tick over

Any ideas ?

I guess I could post a vid on you tube if needed but not at home at the mo

Misc / Open / MOT after May 20th?.
« on: March 29, 2018, 12:09:42 AM »
Hopefully all are aware that from 20th May Historic vehicles no longer need an MOT. This decision has spawned much debate in the classic community.

Interested in fellow owners opinions as to whether they will continue to mot their bikes every year or not

For me I probably won’t bother as I know that I maintain my bike better than most “newish” machines out there and I trust my mechanical skills and knowledge of my bike more than some testers out there.

Why would I want to risk life and limb on a dangerous machine. After all an MOT only says it was ok on the day it was tested.

Interestingly on my way back from mot last year with a pass with no advisories I noticed the top yoke had split on the rhs and the tester never spotted it!! Makes you think don’t it !!!

I keep all receipts etc. for any work done including oil changes etc etc that any future buyer can see and understand that this is a well maintained and cherished bike. After If I ever sell I can always get an mot done for a buyer if they want peace of mind.

CB500/550 / Garage clear out
« on: March 26, 2018, 04:39:58 PM »
Just had a bit of a root around the garage and I have the following available if anyone is interested pm me

1) Full 500 four clutch , good plates in spec, springs, basket, lifter, shim etc

2) Two aftermarket coils CML612 units. They are 5 Ohm primary and 17 Ohm secondary. I bought them last year but never used them as I ended up going full Boyer kit

3) Two original coils working but worn. The outer ht coverings are a bit brittle and have cracked at the entry to the coils but they do work fine

4) Another contact has an original NOS K0 seat in mint condition. Apparently they are as rare as hens now. I can put you in contact here if anoyone is interested

PM with a sensible offer if anything is of interest. They are all on fleabay but rather a forum member benefited

CB500/550 / Bizarre rev counter problem
« on: March 24, 2018, 11:46:18 AM »
Ok I am stumped, rev counter sticks and jumps around above 5k. It seems to be not consistent though sometimes it sticks at 5 then jumps up all the way to 7 or sometimes just plain jumpy.

I have striped the unit and all seems good inside, running it up using a drill on the end of the cable it’s as smooth as anything all the way through the range.

I have tried different cables all to no avail

I am beginning to wonder if it may have something to do with the worm drive off the cam but it looks ok.

Questions

1) anyone any ideas, Iam sure I have isolated the counter and the cable as not being the root cause.?

2) would anyone have a spare worm drive I can borrow for a couple of weeks to try to see if that fixes the problem?Happy to pay postage 2 ways of course.

No urgency as am off road for a few weeks following Inguinal Hernia op so can’t get my leg over so to speak. Julie it is sodding painful by the way!

CB500/550 / Battery is it goosed?
« on: December 30, 2017, 05:34:33 PM »
Just noticed my 2 year old battery (Nitro YB12A-A) was struggling on cranking. I keep it topped up with an optimiser.

Just checked and it needed a massive top up so must have been halfway down cells - agggh!!!

Topped up and back on charge but will it be buggered having got so low or will it recover?

Interesting that I heard using optimisers tends to dry em up, anyone confirm this.

CB500/550 / Primary drive reduction ratios
« on: December 07, 2017, 01:51:10 AM »
Been playing with some numbers but now confused.

The tech spec I have shows the primary reduction ratio as 2.0 for the 500 Four but 3.063 for the 550.

I thought they would be the same so I am a little confused

Can any 4 gurus shed any light on this?
