Interchangeability / Re: CB650 comstar interchangeability

Amazingly enough, ones just popped up on eBay that looked and sounded the part, so I've had a punt.

If it ever gets as far as being stripped, sent to CRK and converted into a spoked one, I'll post some piccy's

Ta for that, but It would mean that I would need the other wheel first, before I could confirm bearings.

The criteria which could vary is the width between the disc mountings. The 650SCC has very deep dished discs compared to the 650Z, and the forks are set wider apart. I can certainly remember that the Telefix (?) brace which I bought for it, said it only fitted the 650SCC and the CB1100R. Hence my concern that there are similar looking, but different hubs out there.

I guess the only easy answer is to get a wheel that's guaranteed to have come off a SCC, that way it'll be right even if I have to pay a premium to get one.

For a long time now I've had it in mind to convert to different rims to have Radial Rubber. I got as far as getting hold of a spoked rear hub off of a CB650C which had its original 17" tyre on, and have been looking for a suitable front with twin discs, and had the idea of maybe an early CB750 one.

Unfortunately without buying a wad of wheels to see what did/did not fit, I've been on-hold. To be honest probably the main reason the CB has been consigned to the back of the shed is that its standard 16" back wheel/tyre is (IMHO) lethal. Consequently to have a matching pair of spoked wheels wearing modern rubber is exactly what I'm after, and whilst I could have at any time re-rimmed the rear hub, it now seems I can have a front made up which will fit straight in.

Hence my question as to whether or not all reversed comstar fronts had the same hub, as at this stage I don't want to buy an old wheel have Cafe Racer Kits convert it and re-rim/spoke, to find it then won't align up with the discs etc.

If the bikes on the centre stand and the front wheel is of the ground, set the handlebars in the middle. Push on one side of the bars and see how it moves. If it takes a two or three pushs to get the wheel to fall into full lock then the Headstock bearings are too tight. If it falls very easily and bounces off the stops, then the bearings are too loose.

If the bearings are too loose, then depending on the type of bearing fitted which will (99% of the time) be either a taper roller, or a plain ball, you can adjust or replace.

If it is the Headstock (Americans call it triple trees) bearings, and they are ball, then you probably can get a taper roller replacement which will be adjustable next time.

Buy a 1/4" drive low reading one. The usual 1/2" drives are only good for torquing up car wheels.  8)

Neither did I  :D

But are all Comstars (Hubs) the same ?, i.e. Is a 19" Reverse Comstar the same as an 18", is a single disc (Hub) the same as a dual disc, and is a 'normal' axle hub the same as a leading axle hub ?.

I had a CB650Z (old type Comstars), and have a CB650SCC and I'm fairly certain the spindles were different.

Any Comstar experts available ?  :)

Are there any other Silencers apart from the Jama ones that will fit the bike ?.

I see there are various exhausts at half the Jama price (

No worries, couldn't wait for an answer so cracked on and put it together  ;D

Couldn't wait to get all the electrics sorted, so tried it and she started almost immediately with the choke working  :D, not bad after 7 years in the garage  8)

Only need to sort the indicator lights and horn, and its off for a MoT  ::)

I've got the carbs off, and cleaned the debris out of the float bowls and checked the jets, but I would like to know the enrichment on No 2 carb is clear.

Without taking the whole rack apart is there an easy way to check on this ?

Thanks

Yeah, the fixing was the easy bit, the getting to it, took somewhat longer  :(

Anyway, Headlight shell back in place as is most of the wiring but for some reason the front indicators don't flash and the rears just stay lit, could be the relay is stuck.

So with the ignition lit up I tried the starter and although the solenoid tripped, there was nothing else  :'(

So stripped out the starter motor and found the drive gear was stuck, attacked it with WD40, stripped the end cover and made sure the brushes were not seized, and freed off the shaft with a pair of moles  ;D

All back together and it nicely spins on the button  :)

If the seals I've ordered come tomorrow, then its forks off  :o

Otherwise, its carbs off as they are going to be well cruddy.

My Haynes 'book of lies' is for the 78 - 81 model, but I see they did a reprint afterwards for 78 - 84 model years.

Could some good soul on here please confirm if the later edition gives any real information over and above the first printing, in respect of whats in/on a 1983 CB650SC-C Nighthawk.

Many thanks

CB650 / Fork Seals
« on: May 26, 2010, 04:43:20 PM »

Just ordered a set of seals and dust covers, is there anything special to look out for on these bikes ?

Aim to fit a set of progressive springs in due course, has anyone got any views re wether to go Progressive (themseves) or Hyperpro ?

Thanks

Stripped the switch and found what was wrong, one of contacts was all tarnished and wasn't making a circuit. Cleaned it all up with some emery on a surface plate, slapped it all back together and its working fine  8)

Just got to put the headlight shell back on and poke all the wires in.

Anyway that saved a few squid to spend on the next item.

Thanks for all your help.

Understand where you're coming from, but looks to me as if Radials in 130/80 will fit, a 140/80 should fit, and a 150/70 could fit, depending on wheel offset, and that's without modding the swinging arm, which as it is so long is desperately calling to be braced  :)

A,  Sorry, but disagree, in my experience Radials can transform the handling of a number of 80's bikes.  OK with those long leading axle forks its never going to be a VFR, but that standard 16" comstar back wheel and x/ply tyre setup is lethal, especially in the wet.  That is, unless crossply's have come on a heap in the last 7 years   :-[.

Anyway, no worries, I'll take my trusty engineers rule to a couple of meets and see what I can size up  ;)
