Title: CB550 K0 Fuel Tap - Dumb Question
Post by: GTB981 on February 16, 2022, 07:48:33 AM
Last week after several months lay up the CB550 was a pig to start and then lacked mid-range. I overhauled the carbs not that long ago but suspected fuel starvation. Went to drain the fuel to replace with fresh and fuel only coming out of one outlet when tubes connected to tap into a petrol can. This is with tap in ON or RES position. Fuel flows from one tube and the other just gurgles as if venting. Makes no difference if tank filler cap open or closed. Surely fuel should be coming from both outlets ? Tap was brand new OEM from DSS about 18 months ago.

Thanks for any help. Gonna play further this evening.

I tend to say, this is 'normal' as this is obeserved by many others. On the other hand verify by blocking the outlet that runs now, the other will start running. If so, no problem. Furthermore you may want to read this: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,164089.msg2158019.html#msg2158019

Thanks, my test was with 2 short lengths of neoprene tube attached to the fuel tap into a container. Tubes hanging vertical. However, there was less than 5L fuel in the tank. The bike took an absolute age to fire up last week and then lacked power. Now that the tank is drained I will try blowing up each pipe with the other blocked and the fuel tap still fitted to the tank. I`ll also take a look at the fuel tap filter. Perhaps I should keep the tank full to aid gravity feed.

I had exactly the same observation when draining my 500 tank with a newly reconditioned tap but carbs fed by the non flowing pipe didn't appear to be starved of fuel when running/riding.
