I bought the XS1100 from him last October featured in his videos. I can not believe that the bike magazine tested it in the condition it was. They did comment about the poor brakes but..........Front tyre on limit. Both front calipers about 90% seized and master cylinder seals shot. All sorted now and it`s a bloody good bike !.

Thanks all, I managed to find an M4 in my box of bolts with allen key head (don`t tell the rivet counters). This clearly had a better thread and has held well. Carbs are now back on awaiting trial. About 4th time lucky !

CB500/550 / CB550 Float Bowl Screws
« on: February 19, 2020, 03:22:01 PM »
I have been chasing fuel leaks for the past few weeks. New fuel tap (OEM), float valves and seats, float pins. Put it back together once and float bowl gasket seal leak (my fault). Put it back together again and leak from number 2 caused by float valve seat not in fully (again my mistake for not double checking) saw it as soon as I lifted the float bowl. Fixed and started to re-assemble and now one thread on No 2 float bowl is  not holding torque as thread partially stripped. Are these M4 ? Could I helicoil it or do I need to source another carb body ?

Thanks for your help.

Bought this `72 Tiger last year from Frank (got a good price for my RD200 against it). It was on the bucket list to own a British bike and I love it to bits. I had a W800 a few years back and can now exactly understand what Kawasaki were aiming for.

Cheers for that. Kind of makes my method a tad impractical.

I`ve had the carbs off my 550 3 times in as many weeks now (long story). I have found you can get the outer airbox rubbers out from the bike after releasing the clamps. The 2 inner ones I pop into the airbox. Keep clutch cable clear and the carbs slide in and out from rhs. The rubbers on my bike are new and I also use red rubber grease. I perfected this method after many a grazed knuckle.

What, as in a kit of O-rings ?  when I searched I couldn`t see carb o-ring kits.

I would not recommend Motobatt. I bought one for my Vmax and it was dead after 1 year and just out of warranty. I now have an Odyssey as per my previous Max. Not cheap but fantastic batteries.
