Title: Always nice to see a bike you sold come back from the grave
Post by: AshimotoK0 on August 09, 2018, 11:36:53 AM
I sold this 2k mile only  CB250G5,  that I pulled out of a rotting shed,  to a guy in the NE last year and he just sent me some pics of it that he's fully restored himself ...  Genuine NOS  silencers from David Silver. Hoping the guy who bought the 300 mile CX next to it in the shed can achieve the same sort of results.

Very nice is it to be ridden or squirrelled away?

I think he's going to ride it but he has a carburation problem at the moment.

Lovely bike and nice colour.  Always good to see old bikes restored to this standard.

What a fantastic job. Always liked those little bikes but never had one. Why must there always be carburation issues though. >:(

I think it's the diaphragm carb CV setup Roy, which foxes people. I fitted a nice spare set of carbs to it as the original 2K mile ones were pretty grotty inside. Trouble is, he's now fitting Keyster carb kits ..personally I would have used the original needles and jets, suitably cleaned up. The diaphragms were perfect so that's not the issue. That model is a bit of a Marmite bike . Very pretty 400/4 front end and styling but the engine is short lived if not regularly serviced and the early ones had serious cam chain tensioner issues. The cam runs directly on the head /cover, so if the cam picks up and trashes the bearing surfaces in the head then it's spend many ££££ time or try to fit phosphor bronze shells. Also it had 6 gears which is totally unnecessary. On the CJ model (even more Marmite  :) ) they reverted back to 5 gears, slightly longer forks and longer swinging arm.  By the CJ they had sorted the tensioner issue. The one pictured was a late model with the mods done at the factory and the top end was absolutely perfect.

Never had one due to being 17 when these were around and obsessed with being the fastest 250 rider round, hence we had RD250 Yamaha's. I was the very first around us with the coffin tank that ironically they nearly buried me in. Should have been dead years ago, kids eh!!

Saw this 305 mile CX500B that was the the CB250G5's shed mate on Facebook this week ... stunning restoration .. I think the guy I sold it to got a pro restorer to do the work on it.
