Title: Frenchy
Post by: marroinia on November 06, 2019, 12:45:13 PM
Hi everyone, i'm 35 years old french, I bought a 77 cb 400 four 6 months ago, 25000km mostly stock.

It's a nice little bike, but the previous owner did very little on it, so I did a big overhaul (thanks to this forum, the us one and the french as well) and replace broken and missing parts with honda parts (david silver, cmsnl :) )
I did a nearly complete tune up (tappets gap, carbs cleaning, brakes, wheel alignment, front shock gaskets, ignition advance and gaps,...)

I just retight the head bolts as gasket have been renew by PO, half a turn was needed, hopefully the oil seepage (dripping?) will magically disappear and the #4 compression will rise a bit. In the same time I unlocked the chain tensionner that was only barely blocked somewhere, and I'm very happy about that :)

a few more to do but the rain stop me for now...

Oh and its my first bike!

Ta everyone!

yep, as soon as the wheather let me do, I shoot pictures of the bike. In france, newbie bikers are limited to 47 bhp, it took me about 4 years to figure out wich bike would fit properly between my smile and my bank account, and that 400 was always on top choice, I'm glad to see it at home!

And a nice rust hole in the collector, just to make her sound better :)

Does anyone knows what are those screws?

The bumpers are missing on the camchain tensioners ends, I got them here from cmsnl, just waiting for more courage to put them in,
I will have to paint the cover side and stick proper sticker for F2 models, and maybe messing around the carbs to adjust them as she is lazy to drop back to idle rpm when cold (but no problem when hot), and knocking/rattling at cold iddle. There is a bit of oil seeping from  somewhere around the headblock...
I ride her today and she goes lovely! no holes when opening the gas, no smoke, bring her up to 9000rpm with no problem, that a great bike!

No idea what those screws are for on the front fender but they shouldn't be there. Nice looking bike.

My standard front fender, covered in WD40, dust and dogs hairs (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200131/f565b9b2d7af7b0dc1ec654b60aff271.jpg)

Hi Nurse Julie, I was thinking about front number plate but screws should have been in line with fender, not across. The pitting points stopping straight in front of the screws prove that something was here...I will probably never know until she learns to speak french  :P

I'm using Belgom Chrome on my chromes, WD40 left me a pale (white) film on them!

Welcome to the forum....another 400/4 though!
I love the way that CB400 four is translated as CB400 oven. Always makes me smile.

I only use WD40 or an oily rag for winter storage and it washes off OK in the spring.
Yes, like you say, a front numberplate would of had the screws inline.

Something was bolted on there.
Maybe a wannabee Harley tool roll?

Perhaps the screws through the mudguard were for a front number plate, those that I owned where one was fitted always had brackets coming from either side of the number plate and bent at a right - angle to fit onto the mudguard, with holes drilled for the rearward mountings and the front attaching to the stay.

I still have a back plate in the garage now from one of the old Honda's that has exactly that configuration.
