CB750 / CB750K0 Carburettor Problems
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:26:43 PM »
Hi all,

My other half has a 1970 CB750K0 which has been causing problems for a while now, it looks stunning but has had consistent carburation problems which we can't solve.

The bike is reluctant to pick up at RPMs less than 3500 - when the throttle is opened it initially dies and then suddenly picks up. There is a considerable amount of hesitation when riding at around 30-40mph. It is also a nightmare when trying to pull away, for example at a junction, he has to rev it and ride the clutch to stop it from dying half way through pulling out. However, the tickover is very sweet, and at higher RPMs (for example, cruising at 50mph plus) it picks up fine.

The carbs have been balanced several times now, just after they have been balanced it runs beautifully, but once it's been left for ten minutes it's all over the place again. It has been checked for air leaks (by spraying fluid onto the engine to see if it temporarily improves) and there are none. Plugs all look perfect.

The bike has been restored to a very questionable standard by a 'professional' company, and it has taken 9 months to even get it running and on the road. However we are now really stuck with the carbs. They have had new carb kits fitted, but we are beginning to think that the carb bodies themselves are worn, and the bike will never run properly with these carbs on it.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? My other half is now looking to source another set of carbs for it, if anyone has any they would be prepared to part with..? :-\

Cheers,

Steph..

CB500/550 / CB550 F2 Misbehaving...
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:02:07 PM »
Hi all,

After being very well behaved for a long time, my 550 F2 has decided to start misbehaving! Basically, the bike has started cutting out at random moments while I'm riding. It seems to happen mainly when I've ridden somewhere, stopped for a cup of tea, then ride off again when the bike has cooled down a fair amount (say after being parked for half an hour). Up until just now, it only seemed to be happening when I let the throttle off completely, but it's just happened while cruising at 70mph on a dual carriageway so that's thrown that theory out the window! :-[ There's no warning at all, no coughing, just a sudden complete cut out. The bike also sometimes takes a while to start again afterwards so may be fuel related? Electrics all still work at the time of the cutout.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms at all, or have any ideas what may be causing it? I replaced the fuel filter and checked the fuel tap last year, so I doubt that's the problem, although I won't rule it out.

Or maybe the 550 is just jealous that I've got a second bike! ::)

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Steph.

CB500/550 / CB550F Gradually losing power and stopping...
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:26:10 AM »
Hi all,

I've also posted this on the US forum so apologies if you've already seen it there.

Went out for a nice evening's ride on my CB550F yesterday, and broke down no less than 4 times on the way home!! I'm just about to start investigating the problem and wondered whether any of you guys would be able to shed any light on it...

The bike hasn't been out a lot recently, has been sitting in the garage and run occasionally. Got her out on Tuesday, filled her up with petrol and went for around a 15 mile ride. No issues at all. Then on Friday went for a 50 mile ride and the bike didn't miss a beat. Yesterday, rode for 5 miles with no problems, and stopped off at a pub.

After that, things started going wrong. Left the pub, got around 2 miles down the road and started losing power. Then she stopped completely, and I pulled over. At this point I realised I'd been an idiot and forgotten to turn the fuel on when leaving the pub, so turned it on and tried to start the bike. Strangely, she didn't start after several attempts... I wheeled her over to a safer spot, sat and contemplated for a bit then tried again, and she started immediately. I rode on, thinking "that's a bit strange" but she seemed to be behaving herself. However, another two miles down the road I started losing power again, losing one cylinder at a time. It would pick up if I opened the throttle fairly sharply, but got progressively worse, then stopped. This time the fuel was definitely on. Pulled over, tried to start, no joy. Fiddled with things, tried switching the fuel onto reserve, made no difference. Waited a few minutes, and she started normally.

Another two miles down the road, repeated the same process. And then again just before I got home!

It's not a battery issue because the electric start is turning over perfectly. Trying to kick start her makes no difference.

Has anyone had anything like this before? Just about to go and break down again then see if there's a spark or not...

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thanks,

Steph.

CB500/550 / My 550F...Nearly there!
« on: April 02, 2012, 01:47:36 PM »
Hi all,

Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my 1978 CB550F (at last... ;) )

I bought the bike last November and have been spending far too much money on getting her back to her former glory! :P Only a few more bits to go now: crash bars to fit, having one of the side panels repainted, and trying to get a gear shift lever in good condition.

So, here she is!

New Member Introductions / Hello from Hampshire!
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:09:38 PM »
Hi all,

I've just joined the site and thought I'd introduce myself! I've recently become the proud owner of a 1978 CB550F2, and I'm just finishing a bit of cosmetic work on her to get her ready for the Summer. I'll post a picture when I get back to my own computer this evening.

I'm in Ringwood, near Bournemouth and just on the edge of the New Forest, so plenty of lovely rides to enjoy :D It'd be great to make contact with anyone else in the area, as I only have Triumph boys to ride with at the moment!

Steph.
