CB500/550 / Workshop manual Where's Page 8?
« on: August 03, 2012, 12:08:29 AM »
I've got the pdf of the workshop manual but it goes straight from tappet adjustment to halfway through balancing the carbs (page 9)
Anyone got the missing pages? I've had a look at various sites bu they all seem to have the same file.

CB500/550 / CB500 Timing marks - what's what?
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:34:16 PM »
This may seem a dumb question but I've always believed that you can open your mouth and appear dumb or keep it shut and stay dumb . . .

I've been working my way through a basic service and have come to the timing. The consensus seems to be that static timing is the way to go and a strobe just gives you the reassurance that your advance is working. I've set the points but when I come to the static timing I'm not sure of which of the marks I should be using. Correct me if I'm wrong . . .
In the first pic, The "T" mark is the one on the left and is TDC for No 1 on compression stroke.
The "F" mark is the one on the right.

Why I'm confused is that the guide here http://www.sohc4.net/index.php/troubleshootingignitions-gettingtothepointsontime/ shows the other set of marks lined up (see the second pic).

Please can someone explain which mark is which and what the others are?

CB500/550 / Oil pressure switch
« on: July 30, 2012, 02:47:07 PM »
An alternative to the expensive OE switch:
http://www.hewisclassicspares.co.uk/oil-pressure-switch-rover-600-800-sterling-triumph-acclaim/

You'll need a couple of M10 washers to lift the body clear of the oil pump.
I used these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261073143690

I also retained the hex screw on the wiring connector 'cos it's easier to tighten.

CB500/550 / Calling carb experts . . .
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:16:03 PM »
I've cured one incontinent carb and am now on to the finer points of getting them to work as a team . . . My initial problem is understanding what all the pipes are for!
Two feed pipes from the tank go to the connection(s) circled on the attached. The bunch of four overflow pipes from the float bowls. I understand these. What are the extra two (overflow?) pipes which attach to the inboard sides of Nos 2&3 (arrowed on the attachment)?
The were routed with the float bowl overflows but I havent found a mention of them in the manuals!

CB500/550 / Seized Screws - Impact driver fail
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:08:56 PM »
 >:(
Removed the alternator cover this evening - well tried to! Yes, I've got my trusty impact driver but the lower two screws had obviously experienced previous abuse and there wasn't much left of the heads. These two aren't blind so the back end will be exposed to all manner of damp crap to aid electrolyitic corrosion. Quickly got to the drill-the-head-off point (man, those screws are harder than I remember).Cover off, two studs exposed. The mole grip will get them now that the tension is removed . . . . see, I've done it before. Unfortunately, not on a 37 year old. Got the back one out but the front one refused to move and the inevitable happened - it snapped off with about 8mm sticking out.
I think I know the answer - drill out and helicoil (if there's enough meat there) but has anyone got any other suggestions?

CB500/550 / Handlebar switches
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:29:18 PM »
They're cosmetically challenged. What's the original finish? Anodised, powder coated? What should I do to restore them, bearing in mind that I intend to ride it?!

Also, the additional light switch on the left. That's an addition, surely? I would have expected the right hand one to have an off position (for the UK market, at least.)
What's the expert view?

CB500/550 / Screw etiquette
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:30:34 PM »
That made you look . . .
In the olden days - I'm talking of the 70s - the cheese-head casing screws (so called because the heads were made of cheese) would be regularly replaced with hex screws. Usually having drilled the head off and mole-wrenched the remnant of stud out
Eminently sensible from an engineering point of view but is it considered a bit "nouveau" for a restoration? Obviously it's never going to win a concours but I'm aiming for "neat, tidy, shiny and ridden".
What's the general view on them?

CB500/550 / CB500 clutch pushrods
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:20:45 PM »
A common point of failure, I believe, and no longer available. I've just managed to get one from a guy in Milwaukee which was NOS.
There's a discussion on making your own http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,3391.msg12852.html#msg12852 If you want to go down that route be aware that the actuator end starts life square and flat. The little dimple your old one is worn by the ball bearing. The end that bears on the clutch is radiused - I can't measure it but the rod diameter for the last 20mm is 7.5mm. I'd guess the radius on the end is 4-> 4.5 mm
The overall length is 255mm with a diameter of 8mm.
I can't imagine why Honda decided to make this a 3/4-piece construction with undercuts (or are then some sort of rolled retaining mechanism?). It looks desperately expensive to me!
Well those are the sizes; some hardening may be necessary depending what you chose to use to make it from.

Anyone got any bright ideas for getting the broken bit out without dismantling the clutch? I've tried a drop of loctite on the other bit . . . .

CB500/550 / Inner tubes - newbie question
« on: June 17, 2012, 11:06:31 AM »
I picked up my new pride and joy yesterday and rode home 73 miles. Unfortunately I live 75 miles from the previous owner . . . I had picked up a puncture  - I suspect the tube's rotted.  :(
On the plus side, I met a guy who got his bike trailer out and repatriated my bike and me  :) :) :) You really do meet the nicest people (when you're) on a Honda!

Anyway, It's many years since I played around with tubed tyres and I'd like to know the correct size inner tubes. I believe I have standard size tyres (90/90 x19 & 350 x 18)

Looking at online suppliers, they all mention rim tapes but don't seem to sell them separately; do they usually come with the tubes these days?

New Member Introductions / New member says Hi
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:54:55 AM »
Greetings from Northamptonshire.
I'm just about to collect a CB500; It's registered 1975, in brown and mostly original apart from the pipes. Some cosmetic work required but it's a runner (it says here!). I've wanted one ever since I started biking back in the 70s so I'm looking forward to getting to grips with its wrinkles and foibles and will be unashamedly picking brains here to help me do it!
Thanks in advance, Pete
