Title: Multi bike insurance
Post by: cooleronthecoast on January 07, 2020, 01:07:24 PM
Now I've added the Triumph Thruxton to my (mini) fleet, I'm wondering what would be the best way forward re insurance?  My CB550 is on a limited mileage classic policy with Carole Nash which costs me about 50 quid p.a.  My Aprilia Tuono is currently insured by Hastings and costs a wee bit more. Lol.   Rather than have a third separate policy for the Trumpet, I was thinking of trying to combine all three on one ticket, but trying to get multi bike quotes via the Meerkats isn't easy, at least not for a computer wally like me.  Before I jump on the phone and ring around I was wondering what you guys/gals do (which companies do you use) when you have several bikes to insure?

I have some bikes on a multi policy with Swinton, some other on another multi policy with Hastings Direct and a load more bikes on individual policies with whoever comes up with the cheapest policy / best cover for our needs. All classics. With some of our bikes it's cheaper to insure them individually than on a multi policy as we both need the facility to ride each others bikes, so we are covered for whoever has the bike insured and which one of us is riding it. The least I pay for a policy is £54 for one bike, all the others are £60-70 individual and always less than a £100 for multi policies. I should add that I have never made a claim on any bike insurances in over 40 years, so I can't vouch for any companies services😁😁😁😁

Thanks John, Peters website says he only covers stuff over 20 years old.  OK for the CB, but I doubt he'd be interested in the other two.

Peter James for me as well, cheaper than Carol Nash £150 for my Deauville and CB750F1.

Just noticed your reply, the Deauville is a 2000 reg and he has been insuring it with the F1 for a few years, may be worth giving it a try.

Cheers

I use Footman James for my classic multi bike/car agreed value policy and I'm happy with the cost. But quoting/comparing the cost of the various classic bike/car multi insurances is like comparing apples with pears unless the full details and particular requirements are known e.g. bike(s) value(s), mileage, agreed value, postcode, accidents/convictions etc, etc.

All I would say is that if you have or get an individual or multi bike/car classic agreed value insurance policy make sure the company offers (and you take out) a 'Nil Deduction Salvage Retention' option, otherwise the value you think you'll receive and what you actually get in the event of a write-off may well be very different. Worth looking into.

Cheers,
Andrew

You are right Andrew.  I don't want to get into the specifics of cost here, because as you say everyone's different, age, location driving record etc etc.  I just would like to know which companies might cover all my bikes on one policy if possible, bearing in mind only the CB550 is over 20 years old.  The Tuono is a modern sports bike on a '66 plate and the Thruxton is a 2011 model.   Having done a bit of checking this afternoon I think I might just be as well insuring all 3 separately.  Some of the quotes I've got back from the multi bike insurers (including Carole Nash who currently insure my CB550) are just nuts.

I agree Andrew and the prices I quoted have no bearing on the question ☺️ What I was trying to highlight is that sometimes multi polices cost a lot more than insuring the bikes individually, depending on personal circumstances of course.

Bikesure for me, multi bike policy, agreed valuations on all four bikes very reasonable.

I went with Peter James when I wanted an agreed value of £12,000 on my freshly restored CB750 K1, which was sorted out very agreeably, rather than trying to argue the toss after the event if it ever went AWOL. I needed a valuation report from someone in the bike trade, and paid a small extra on the premium. Putting my CL450 on as well was very inexpensive.

I'm down to only 2 bikes now, but PJ are still very reasonable fully comp, though being an older person with a long NCD helps a lot. Finding out what young people have to pay for big bike insurance these days is one of the few pleasures of getting old (along with telling them about free higher education, free love etc). When I was 17 and had just passed my test I had a Norwich Union riders policy, any bike (belonging to anyone, with the owner's permission) up to 900cc, £32 p.a.

Don't get me started on Carole f*^$ing Nash or Steve will be getting a cease and desist letter from their lawyers.

I've used Footman James for some 18 years now, for (usually) one modern bike and two classics, all on the road. I moved to them following some disappointing service from another well - known broker, who refused to confirm in print their advice that I would not need confirmation of my comprehensive cover for a trip to France, despite their own Handbook stating that this was a necessity!

In terms of service, confirmation of garaging arrangements, adding bikes to and removing them from the policy has always been dealt with competently, and any advice given is followed with an immediate confirmation by e-mail and usually letter.

In short, highly recommended!

Just looked at Footman James online and they won’t insure a bike unless it’s over 15 years old.I currently have 2 modern and 3 classics with Peter James ( now Miller James )

I haven't found that Footman James restrict cover on newer bikes. During the past few years they have covered my BMW K1300GT (2010), Kawasaki 1400GTR (2011) and Kawasaki Versys 1000 (2015) and currently I have the BMW and Honda CB750K2 insured with them.

One rule that I am aware of though, is that the number of "modern" bikes cannot exceed the number of classics insured on the same policy.

I've been with CN since 1992! It's not through blind faith either but every year at renewal time they cannot be beaten although I do have to call a few other companies first in order to go back to CN in order to get them to drop their renewal premium. I thought I had a better deal lined up last year with another company but they couldn't offer the roadside recovery or the helmet and clothing cover that CN could as part of their price.
I have one modern and several classics under their rider policy.
I have never had a problem with CN, when the 250RS seized on the M40 I was recovered with the hour. When i was knocked off my VFR in 1999 they paid up and I had a replacement bike by the afternoon.
No doubt this year I'll go through the same rigmarole at renewal time, this is the only thing that bugs me, why don't insurance companies give their cheapest price at renewal instead of having to haggle!

Its a very good point Dave.   I've just renewed the car insurance and last year I went with Saga for both our cars (the wife and I) when I talked to them on the phone after their renewal price was 18% higher than last years price, they admitted a fair percentage of the increase was because I no longer qualified for their 'introductory' discount as an existing customer.  That TV ad is spot on, many companies do penalise you for being an existing client.   :'(

Hi Dave....check out this YouTube 'interrogation' of the 3 main Irish Insurance Companies by Irish MP's................I have no doubt that the English/ Scottish Insurance Industry isn't much different in terms of the % of Fraudulent Claims they experience.

When you consider how the UK Insurance Companies INSIST (and record for later and use it as a legal tool if necessary when claims are made) that Customers ALWAYS provide accurate and truthful information when obtaining Quotes and accepting Insurance cover, it beggars belief how they can get away with their claims that massive Fraud is hiking up their premiums - as the Irish Companies have.

So if I am economical with the Truth I can be punished.....but if the Insurers are economical with the truth - they won't be punished ! One rule for tham....and another rule for us !

Alan, what can I say after having watched the video you posted!   Unbelievable levels of spin being placed on the number of fraudulent claims by the insurance companies in order to hike up the premium price.  They told the Parliamentary committee fraudulent claims are running at 20% but the actual number the insurance companies they themselves reported following investigation of these claims is actually 1%, Unbelievable!! The sad fact is they are all using this excuse to hike up premiums every year and there is nothing we as customers can do about it other then continually shop around.
Great video and thanks for posting, a real eye-opener I recommend everyone on the forum views it, we are all in the same boat after all   :-\

Just as a footnote, I've now got the renewal premium for my Aprilia Tuono.   Without going into the specifics, the renewal from Hastings is circa £100 more than last years price!   So diving onto the Meerkats website, I've found equivalent cover with Bennetts for £70 LESS than last years quote, so more than £170 less than Hastings wanted off me this year.   Incidentally I ended up insuring the Thruxton with Bennetts too, although not on a multi bike basis.  The CB550 remains with Carole Nash until it needs renewing in May, I'll report back then. Lol
