Title: Rear brake rod adjuster
Post by: Bradders on January 27, 2023, 04:52:57 PM
Have just fitted new rear brake shoes to my bike but when adjusting the brake rod adjuster I can only get  three or four revolutions on the adjuster before the brake starts binding on. Do you think that will be enough revolutions? Ie, no chance of the adjuster pinging off as I apply the brake?

I used Villiers as recommended by Julie and they made a very nice job of the shoes.

Move the operating arm one spline to get more turns, somebody  in the past has probably moved it the other way

The arm and the pivot bolt it's fitted to should be marked with punch dots, these line up to show you were it should be aligned. Same with the brake pedal and it's pivot arm, if that's fitted too far forward you'll get what your experiencing now as well.

Thanks guys. I thought I had lined up those punch marks, I had better take another look.

I found with new linings sometimes you need to move one spline off the dots to get enough thread on the rear nut.

Never had to do that with genuine Honda shoes Ted.

PS
It was the brake pedal that I moved one spline not at the drum end.
Might be pivot wear or not the original rod or pedal - or something to do with the missing return spring. It just worked - when the rear linings wear down a bit it might need moving back to where it was.
