hi
question about rims and tyres , this bike i am restoring not been used since 1983, dvla agrees to this, previous owner had started to restore it but decided against to concentrate on his bsa, he changed rear tyre and rim and spokes .
done a bit of research but wanted to clarify,
rear wheel
rear wheel rim in good condition has stamp D.I.D ( take it this is manufacturer, ) 185 by 18 tyre 306, is this march 06? ( safe to use still ? )
front wheel ( fun starts ) 185 by 19 ( bigger ?) 380 on tyre ( march 1980?)
fron wheel rim is in very poor condition and tyre/rim etc to be replaced, am i right with these codes though, seems very odd to have tyres that seem to differ by 23 years ?
also i am keen to have a go at lacing, possibly might have to take rear wheel apart to clean up hub, think with a spare afternoon i could do it, not keen on doing final trueing ( if thats correct word ) any local wheel finishers to me in northants area anyone could recommend

Dont know of any code on tyre that gives date of manufacture,
DID was Honda OEM supplier
Rims and spoke kits from Dave Silver
Lacing and truing just takes time and patience---Give me a call andi'll talk you through it

-
are there any more letters or numbers besides 306 & 380 ? cheers Mick.

Interesting and useful link.
Once I got there I didn't read it straight away though, something much more interesting caught my eye...
-
spokes that are listed on ds site, anyone know if they are stainless, or where i can get stainless ones
-
Call them.
They're very helpful and know what they're talking about.
-
Personally dont like stainless as its too stiff and not maleable
-
Have a look at the Hagon site.
I got my rim and spokes from them.
-
ordered the rim and spokes from ds, will give it a go and see how i get on
hub came up pretty good
thanks for replies

Looks nice.
What paint did you use?
-
just heat resistant engine paint, guy next door is a sprayer and had a few tins and asked if i had any use for them, bit of laquer to seal it and hoping it will be ok.
seem to have spent weeks cleaning and this is first part that actually looks something like i thought it would

Hints on building:-
There are 20 each of two types of spoke---
one goes from the ouside inwards and the other from the inside outwards,
Sort out the first type and where they go in the hub and just fit those and lace to rim, get these tight and the rim running true.
This way you are only adjusting 20 spokes not 40; the other 20 you can slide in a fit easily (Don't work if you do it the other way round!)
When truing find where the rim is "Welded" and mark it as there is always a "Kick" at that point and trying to true it out has sent many a novice do-lally
