Bought the wood to fix my workmate yesterday. £30 for one piece of hardwood, not even a big piece  Going to see if I can make 2 new worksurfaces later today. This is an original Black and Decker workmate from the late 70s, nearly 50 years old. It's been left outside in all weathers, had engines dumped on it loads of times, I've used it as a step ladder etc. There's very little of the original blue paint left on the metal now  I was thinking of dismantling it totally and having it powder coated, shining up the alloy braces etc so it looks brand new again. There's a TV program in that I reckon

Does that make them as good as original though Graham?
The same manufacturer who produced exhaust hangers for the 500-4 also did the repro ones that DS sells and they got them wrong, not only is the metal thinner but they bent them at the wrong angles. The upper ones are fine, the lower ones are well out. Unless they are using the same machinery as they did in the 70s, with the same materials as then I think the reproduction will never be as good as the original.

I suspect the box was imported Graham to cover a shortage of that colour shell over here. The main warehouse for Honda in Europe was in Holland, maybe that's why CMS are based there now.
I used to regularly browse the store room at Queenies and I never saw any shells in boxes, they were all in little bags with brown paper wrapped shells. Which funnily enough is what's in the box, 2 shells in bags. Makes me wonder why they did that, seems a waste of a box.

Ones on the left are production done in the 90s IIRC. The ones on the right are period ones. I have some in pairs in boxes, never seen that in the UK, they were all sold singly over here. The boxes came from Australia originally.
Not sure if I've said this Roo but those discs, when they come they must be fitted with the fronds facing the same direction as the Dremel rotates. Easy way to do this is to look at the disc, one side has a small indent/hole, face this indent to it faces the Dremel and they are the correct orientation. My BIL just bought some after watching me clean some of his pieces and he complained the fronds were hitting him in the face, he clearly didn't read the instructions on the Amazon page.
Not sure if you've got a Dremel Flexible shaft for your Dremel Roo but if not let me know and I may have a spare one lying around. I've returned 3 Dremels under warranty and they always send a brand new boxed kit in return so I had some spare shafts, just given my BIL one and my daughter has claimed one to but I may have another somewhere. The difference the shaft makes is amazing.

DS is selling OEM cables, not original. He does order the genuine ones but they are over £30 to buy. Andy Cepok has them but he won't post to the UK anymore. Maybe Alex could buy a few and send them over

If you can find a decent second hand one I'd advise changing the shaft as the splines will go eventually. The inner ring is almost useless as they are, that means the outer ring is carrying all the stress and they will fail in time. Either that or don't use it very often

Main stand, usually mud causes that. The webbing around that area is hollow, due to it's location it gets all sorts of stuff thrown at it by the back wheel. The dirt sticks inside, when it gets wet is acts like a huge sponge and just starts to eat away at the metal from the inside, you can't see it as it's hidden and the first you'd normally know of it is the paint bubbling on the surface as the rusts underneath blows it off the metal. By this time it's usually too late, the place in question is also a pivot point for the weight of your body, so when the rust has eaten enough of the metal that it's significantly weakened it the pressure of lifting the bike with your weight as well will snap it off. You see a clean break as that's what's left of the metal but the outsides will just be rust.
Frame, they do them cold because the heat will remove the frame paint and the customer doesn't want that do he, no he'd sooner it was weaker than have to repaint the frame.
Dealer, easy, they wanted to sell you another set of bars. Although in this case I'd 50% agree with him, if the metal is creased it's compromised, if it's just a slight bend then straighten them, it's the fact they are chrome which means they don't want to heat them and destroy the finish which means they tend to bend them cold.
Tow bar, probably heat treated as standard so any other type of heat will compromise it's safety, lot of stress on a tow bar and they can't take a chance of the trailer coming loose because it shears off.

So what about welding parts, are they weakened? If no heat was applied I'd agree it could weaken the part but with heat it allows the metal to be reshaped without significantly weakening it. Maybe the mechanic thought you meant just hitting it straight again.

Metal fatigue though isn't the same as a piece of metal that's just bent, it may change the structure but I doubt it would weaken it.
If that was the case we couldn't really recycle metal.

Yeah that's bent, unusually upwards. Also check to see if it's bent backwards as that's how they go when you hit them against the road. Needs to be cherry red to bend it back, I speak from experience

The splines on that kick start shaft look pretty bad. Are you sure it's not just spinning on the lever? Watch the centre shaft as you slowly kick and see if it's actually moving.
Make sure the springs are located properly as well or it won't work.

I may have not only an earlier grab rail but the mounts for it and the stems. Trouble is he's in Europe so postage and such. I also have some front stems that fit the headlights somewhere.

Trouble with those Mick is you need a 500 grabrail as well as the opening the the 550 grabrail he has is bigger so the rubber mounts would just fall through and it's the mounts that give the spacing needed to fit those stems.
