Title: GS1000 rebore.
Post by: royhall on February 13, 2021, 05:06:24 PM
Just started on the top end of the GS1000 and it really needs a re-bore. Anyone know what bore clearance is suitable for the Cruzinimage piston kit. I daren't ask them or they will blacklist me again.

I wanted the same info when I installed a Cruzinimage 836 kit on my CR750 Rep a few years ago. Don't know if its relevant to GS but Hondaman on US site said following about Cruzinimage kit (I cut and pasted/saved it from the post a few years ago)

Re: Cheap 836 kits back on ebay...$110!

I installed a set on a gently-used bike last year. I think it has about 500 miles on it now. Be sure to use the clearance of 0.0010" to 0.0012" with those pistons, as they do not have the micro-groove skirts like some 836 kits.

If nothing else is done but boring and installing these type of 836 pistons, the typical HP increase is about 8. If you follow all the steps in my book, like valve work, port work, quench band, spark curve change, and final carb tuning with stock airbox (NOT pods), you can get 12 HP from the installation. If you also add a mild cam like the K0 cam, this can add 2 HP more to that figure. If you go much further than that, like a Webcam 41 or something, you might wish to consider stronger rods as you nudge toward 80 HP. MRieck can install larger intake valves for you, too, which can push it to a 90 HP and require that you think about something other than a stock spoked rear wheel.  ;)

Thanks Phil. I was expecting something like 1 to 1.5 thou. How did the Honda big bore build turn out in the end, I remember you having some setup difficulties.

You can't go by Honda clearance as, it depends if the liners are spun cast and what the silicone to alloy contents is  ;)

Got there in the end Roy - 130 mains and 45 primary (had to drill out 40's with .45mm drill as couldn't get 45's). Putting 45's in was the key - it seemed to smooth the tansition to the bigger mains and solve the main issue of a varying eratic tickover. I don't use it much as I tend to go out on the 750k2 and ZZR as no electric start on the CR due to race alternator reuiring removal of the starter gear - although Andy at 'Good Bits ' has done a conversion so thats the next project after I finish the 500k2

I'm 'banned' too! - have been for a few years and don't know why. I have to order via my wife's ebay. I didn't know about web site until recently

Ask them on GSresources forum and most of them are banned for asking legitimate questions. It's as if they are trying to get rid of their entire customer base.

Maybe legitimate questions in English translates to insults in Japanese!

Yamiya in Japan are exactly the same .. I told them the carb top rubbers they were selling as suitable for the  CB750 early model,  were for the later model. So they cancelled my un-shipped, but paid for,  order .... worth about £1,200 and with about 30 odd items on it  and instantly refunded my PayPal payment. I think it's an honour thing  ;)
