Having trawled through 40 pages of previous CB400 posts I have failed to find previous discussions about fitting new gaskets - to Goo or not to Goo that is the question - then it's what Goo?
In the past (mainly on cars) I have just greased a new gasket on both sides and fitted them what's the best way?

Fit it just as it came out of the packet Ted, dry.

Ted, I would be of the opinion that greasing the gasket could spoil any natural adhesive properties of the gasket material with anything other than plain gasket paper. The manufacturer of head and base gaskets will understand the duties and environment the gasket operates in and it should be optimum for the job. I agree with Julie.
Having said that I have taken the precaution of adding a very fine smear of Hylomar to any area that has to withold hydraulic pressure, such as the hole where the oil feed comes through the base gasket. ;)
Hope this helps.

Very wise, I'm sure it will be perfect Ted, the grease would have caused some problems later for you. Just me being belt and braces from the days when I was on the spanners !!
Didn't get chance to see your thread until tonight, so could not comment before.

Genuine Honda gaskets(a rarity nowadays) had a "sticky" substance in areas on the gasket like around the camchain tunnel and oil passages.
Head gaskets always go on dry, other paper gaskets can have a small amount of clean grease used, exhaust gaskets dry

What size gravel Ken? And does it need rebar?

Ken, we must get together sometime you are as mad as me!

Look Oddjob here are the facts - I had charisma bypass surgery a couple of years ago so I'm still re-learning my sense of humour as that was deleted before the operation to avoid internal conflict syndrome.
I read the post about using concrete /cement as headgasket goo but just assumed you meant floor levelling compound so I gave your possible Dyslexia the benefit of the doubt.
Last thing I need is you throwing in doubt into the equation when I am hyper with nagging doubts as the default position - you are just pouring oil on very troubled waters please stay in the shallow end or I might drown in despair.

PS Do you have a helpline number I can ring or do I call the Samaritans before it's too late?
-
Don't bother with the Samaritans. It's all automated these days.
Press 1 if you're feeling suicidal
Press 2 if you've murdered your spouse
That kind of thing.
If you press 1, you get connected to an Arabic call centre who asks you if you can drive a truck or a light aircraft.
