Member 4 Sales / CB500 K1 replacement seat
« on: December 19, 2021, 10:53:00 AM »
I have been tidying the garage and found this stored in the rafters. ISTR that I bought this from DSS about three years ago but haven't used it for some reason. DSS replacement seat for a CB500 Four K1 with a plastic base. Complete with grab strap and chrome trim. Never fitted, a bit dusty but otherwise as purchased I think. Close inspection suggests that the front trim could do with a bit of adhesive, otherwise it's good to go.

Part number from DSS HHCAA-323-050AP, cost new £178 inc VAT plus delivery.
Priced at £100 delivered to a UK mainland address.
Payment through PayPal F&F or bank transfer.

Thanks, Sye

CB500/550 / Tank cap rubber seal orientation
« on: July 31, 2019, 04:49:22 PM »
Which way round does the rubber cap seal go please, with the thinner bit towards the cap or the tank? Or does it matter? The one I took off was too brittle and came appart when removed.

TIA

CB500/550 / Fixing 500 side cover badges
« on: July 03, 2019, 02:12:03 PM »
I have had the side covers painted and need to reattach the badges but both have a short end peg where it's been snapped previously. They were glued to the panel where the short peg was and I don't want to do this for obvious reasons.

Has anyone found a succesful way of either extending the peg or attaching the badge without using glue. Doubtful I know, but if I can avoid £70 for a new pair I will. TIA

Not SOHC but Honda nevertheless. these things come along when your not looking and sometimes you just have to buy it. 1983, 13000 miles from new, all history and one-owner. Mint is not the word.

Anorak's Corner / CB750 four baffle into CB500 four
« on: May 19, 2019, 11:04:59 AM »
I've been thinking ahead a little about what to do when the silencers finally give up on my 500 four K1. I noticed that the CB750 has removable baffles, secured by a screw and started wondering. The 750 baffles are not expensive and readilly available but the 500's are welded in place. it's likely that the baffles will disintegrate before the rest of the silencer.

It wouldn't be a big job removing the weld and inserting the 750 baffles if they fit and would be the ideal time to get them rechromed. The question is do they fit? I can't be the first person to think about this, so maybe someone knows for sure?

CB500/550 / What to do about colours
« on: April 17, 2019, 05:32:45 PM »
It looks as if I've cocked up a little. It's my own fault for not double checking.  :(

Both side panels had seen better days, the right side was badly cracked and the left had a lug missing, so I bought a pair of replicas from LPM. I decided to paint them myself, so checked on the correct colour for the 72 K1 which is candy gold. Painted them today only to discover that the bike had been repainted at some time in Starlight gold which is much lighter.

So, what to do? Do I repaint the side panels in starlight gold or send the lot of to Menno for the correct candy gold colour. the tank is in a good state, just the wrong colour for the year.  :-[

CB500/550 / Front brakes
« on: April 09, 2019, 01:46:38 PM »
I've refurbed the master cylinder and put a new piston and seal in the brake caliper. Bled the brakes and adjusted the screw as per manual. When the brake is applied it bites fine but doesn't release properly when you stop. If I get a wedge between the disk and caliper body I can move it slightly then the binding stops. It is definitely binding rather than a little drag.

Is this normal, will it free off in use and has anyone come across this before please?

CB500/550 / Tool tray net
« on: March 21, 2019, 04:21:36 PM »
Hi all, I got my tool tray net, part number 83502-323-000 today, thanks Mike. I find that the mesh sits on top of the airbox lid venturi sticky up thing when it's installed, is this correct? It doesn't go all of the way down to the lip, which indicates that something may be wrong. Is this normal?

CB500/550 / Somewhere in Japan...
« on: March 10, 2019, 04:33:58 PM »
...there is a very happy man. He's very old by now and he's sitting in front of the TV or reading a book. Every now and then he takes a ball of rice, a bit of fish and smiles. Sometimes he chuckles and at other times he laughs out loud. This strange behavior first began in the early 70's and his family have never worked out what it is but I know exactly what it is.  8)

This is the man who designed the four-into-four exhaust for the 500 four. He keeps thinking about the poor round eyed idiots who have to remove it and try and line it all back up again. In a moment of madness he even made sure that taking the rear wheel out was a major event. You can't just take the nut off and remove the spindle, oh no, you have to slide the whole lot out of the back end. This makes him very happy but today, it made me very angry, well, a little...  >:(

I've been arsing about since 10am fitting the exhaust. I say fitting the exhaust but as I type tears of frustration are rolling down my cheeks. I've talked to it, realigned it (10 times), persuaded it and even pleaded with it but can I line up the two rear tubes, can I fook!  :'( Leaving it for today before the lump hammer comes out and I do something I'll regret. Back to it tomorrow, wish me luck. ;D

CB500/550 / Throttle cable routing
« on: March 09, 2019, 05:17:13 PM »
Looking at all of the available information the throttle cables run over the top of the R/H headlight ear, down the left side and through the coil hole. My question is, do they go between the wiring cluster and the headstock or between the wiring and the headlight shell? Seems a bit long next to the headstock and may pinch the wiring if they are in front.

Thanks.  ;D

CB500/550 / Build well under way
« on: March 09, 2019, 11:28:58 AM »
Things are moving on but I'm very busy with work, so don't have as much time as I would like to get on with it. Hey-ho, that's life.  ::)

Thanks to Mick for the switchgear, which I rewired and is now fitted to the bike. Graham is absolutely right about the headlight on/off switch positioning as I found out. Once the switch is located with the pin, it leaves a gap exactly the correct size for the switch as shown in the (blurry) picture. If it's still not correct in any way don't tell me as this is how it's going to be.  ;D

I have fitted an Electrex combined reg/rec and fitted a Scottoiler in the freed up space. I've also moved the electronic ignition to somewhere better than just shoved down the space between the mudguard and battery and thought I would share the locations with you. I think it looks very tidy and can't be seen once the side panels are on.

Still lots to do and I will post more pictures as i go.

CB500/550 / Switch cable routing

Does anyone know for sure if the UK 500K1 had the switch wiring inside or outside the handlebars please. Looked at loads of pictures and some have them in and some out  ::)

CB500/550 / L/H switch 500K1
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:23:53 AM »
I thought I would start another thread as I found the correct switch (I think) in the box of junk that came with the bike. I don't know if it's worth attempting to refurb it as it's deffo been severely interfered with over the years. It's been rewired by a gorilla and attacked here and there with various dremel tools. That said, everything is there but and can probably be salvaged with a lot of work. I still have the old loom, so could cut that in half and rewire the switch using correct colour codes.

I have attached a few pictures to help and would like your opinions on whether it's doable? You will notice that the body finish is poor and that's to be expected. I assume that can be painted satin black and highlighted in red with a paintbrush. The switch gear itself appears functional but I can test that and know for sure.

The wiring looks as if it's been exiting in two places. Through the side of the body and the end, surely this is wrong? It also looks as if it was designed for solid bars without the hole. Was this standard at the time?

So many questions and not enough knowledge!

CB500/550 / Wiring help please
« on: March 02, 2019, 05:06:05 PM »
Hi, I had to buy a new loom for the K1 which seems to be missing a connector (or two). the bike has the additional 2-way lighting switch marked HL - OFF. There are two wires that come from this, one black (live) and the other brown with a blue stripe. My loom has no matching wires for the brown/blue wire and I can't find it on the wiring diagram. Has anyone come across this before and know the work-around.
This is the loom I bought: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Main-Wiring-Harness-32100-323-040-Honda-CB500K-1972-1973-WH-323/232588249294?hash=item36275708ce:g:0BsAAOSwmwtaKAGZ:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true
Thanks.
