CB500/550 / Bit left over
« on: February 24, 2019, 09:32:23 AM »
After fitting the replacement coils i have a piece left over from the parts box. It's No19 on the image and looks as if it attaches to a bracket but I can't remember where and it's not clear on the parts list. Any ideas welcome.

CB500/550 / When you just can't see it
« on: February 21, 2019, 06:03:30 PM »
I'm going through one of those age related moments and just can't see the answer. It's obvious (probably) But I'm too dim to see it. The 500 I bought had Boyer ignition and standard coils. the insulation had cracked on all four lead, so I replaced them with Boyer coils. Not the mini ones but the Honda replacement ones that bolt straight on. Spec is 4.2 - 4.6 ohms, so should be good to go.

Now, the Honda coils have a yellow feed on the L coil and a blue feed on the R, with a black/white wire common to both. The Boyer coils have blue (+) and yellow (-) on both coils. The electronic output has one blue and one yellow wire and a black (earth). The destructions say "Connect the blue and yellow wires from the transistor box with the female connections to the blue and
yellow wires removed from the ignition coils". How can this be right or am I thick?

The Honda wiring diagram shows two wires going to the original coils, one yellow to the left coil + and one blue to the right +. An additional black/white goes to the - side of both coils from the kill switch.

My head hurts!

CB500/550 / Replacement coils
« on: February 18, 2019, 04:47:04 PM »
I was about to refit the coils when I discovered a load of breaks in the HT leads insulation. I have read loads of stuff on here about replacements. Some are good and other are crap, with a minimum primary resistance of 4.5 ohms. There are loads out there and most don't mention the resistance. Can some kind soul let me know where they bought theirs and know them to be good?

TIA.

CB500/550 / Replacement battery leads CB500
« on: February 17, 2019, 02:41:43 PM »
I've just taken a good look at the battery leads and they are well past there best and I doubt hat they are original. Does anyone know what gauge cable is used and where I can get the flag terminals from so I can make some up?

It seems that both battery connectors should be soldered flag terminal rings with a 6mm hole. The earth strap should have a flat 8mm ring on the other end and the live a flat 6mm ring? Anyone done this before and can give me a pointer please?

CB500/550 / Front mudguard replacement 500 K1
« on: October 20, 2018, 01:35:35 PM »
I have posted this on the backend of another thread but seeing as I'm on a roll thought I would annoy you with another question.

The 500 four front mudguard is no longer available and mine's been beaten around like Father Ted's raffle prize Honda Accord. I know you can get the 750 mudguard to fit but then noticed that the 550 four front is still available as a genuine Honda part, number 61100-341-700XW. It's a different part number to the 500 but looks to be identical(ish). Does anyone know for sure if it's a straight swap please?

CB500/550 / Anyone know what this part is please?

Part number 11 in the attached image. What is it and what does it do? I kept everything in bags when I stripped the bike down and this part wasn't there, honest.  ???

Oops, here is the image:

CB500/550 / Headlight washer alternatives

Anyone know of an alternative to the small M5 collar 61303-292-000 for the headlight case please? I only have one and they appear to be no longer available?

CB500/550 / Front muguard mounting question
« on: October 18, 2018, 04:42:04 PM »
I'm a bit confused and either have the wrong front mudguard and forks on my 500 K1 or DSS have made a mistake? The bracket and stay mounts on my bike all use M6 bolts with the front brake mount using an M8. On the DSS side they list a 750 K2 mudguard as a replacement and state that it uses an M10 instead of M8 mounts on one side and to consider using washers.

Mine uses all M6 for mounting is this correct or do I have the front end off a C90?  :-\

CB500/550 / Speedo drive quastion
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:36:27 PM »
I'm in the process of rebuilding a rolling chassis, pics to follow I promise.

The front wheel axle has been torqued to 40lbs-ft as per spec but this locks the speedo drive in place and the cover will not move. The speedo works fine when the wheel is turned but ISTR that you should be able to swivel the cover? Is this normal or am I puddled?

CB500/550 / Massive thanks to Oddjob
« on: October 13, 2018, 12:00:49 PM »
As in the title. He kindly sent me a R/H switch lower that had been on his bike when it caught fire. A few hours with a wire brush and abrasive paper, primer and the magic satin black et voila! Looks good and I'm happy!

Donation made to the site as per his request. Thanks again, this place is Great!

CB500/550 / Daft Question No5 - what goes where?
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:08:35 PM »
I have either had a stroke, am extremely dim or it's not obvious!  :o

I have a 500 K1 with separate high/low and indicator switch on the L/H/S. Try as I might I cannot get these to sit flush together. I assume that it's grip/indicator/high/low but the indicator cables get in the way. How does it fit please?

Thanks, Sye.

CB500/550 / Derailment plate oil seal
« on: September 23, 2018, 11:49:33 AM »
Which way round does the 34x55x9 oils seal go in the chain derailment plate please? Writing out or in as I can't make my mind up why it's there? I suspect it's writing in to keep water out but want to make sure, thanks.

Humour / Business trip
« on: September 19, 2018, 04:42:28 PM »
A man boarded an airplane and took his seat. As he settled in, he glanced Up and saw the most beautiful woman boarding the plane. He soon realized She was heading straight towards his seat. As fate would have it, she took The seat right beside his. Eager to strike up a conversation he blurted out, “Business trip or pleasure?”

She turned, smiled and said, “Business. I’m going to the Annual Nymphomaniacs of America Convention in Boston."

He swallowed hard. Here was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen Sitting next to him, and she was going to a meeting of nymphomaniacs!

Struggling to maintain his composure, he calmly asked, “What’s your Business at this convention?”

“Lecturer,” she responded. “I use information that I have learned from my Personal experiences to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.”

“Really?” he said. “And what kind of myths are there?”

“Well,” she explained, “one popular myth is that African-American men are The most well-endowed of all men, when in fact it is the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait. Another popular myth is That Frenchmen are the best lovers, when actually it is Scotsmen who are the best. I have also discovered that the lover with Absolutely the best stamina is the Irish

Suddenly the woman became a little uncomfortable and blushed.. “I’m Sorry,” she said, “I shouldn't really be discussing all of this with you. I don’t Even know your name.”

“Tonto,” the man said, “Tonto McTavish but my friends call me Paddy".

CB500/550 / Fork seal help please
« on: September 12, 2018, 05:34:37 PM »
I have refurbished my forks on my 500 K1 and fitted one of the seals, genuine Honda, part number 91255-KBH-003 from DSS. It is fully seated but there is a good sized gap between the top of the seal and the circlip. Is this normal? I would have thought that the clip would sit on top of the seal to stop any upward movement?

TIA, Sye.
