Title: CB750F1 Project
Post by: martin_uk on November 14, 2014, 01:35:03 PM
Bought bike from friend who told me the engine was seized from standing and probably needed a light hone and rings!

I think it has an early Honda worm drive

I don't know whether it's badly corroded or part of the piston ring has been bouncing about in the chamber

Just a rotary wire brush, the metal had corroded so badly .

Can be repaired but, the cost would be sky high. It would need everything.

I had a cb550 head that had similar dammage. In my case a previous owner had broken all the top rings, several of which had smashed out of the top of the pistonand scratched and dented the head up something chronic. They had obviously been in there, removed most of the debris, sealed up again re using old gaskets and leaving bits of broken ring in the sump and blue gaskett goo behind as a calling card. I bought thd bike taxed and tested, rode it a bit and found it was ok to ride but if stalled when hot it wouldn't restart until cold. It also leaked oil, but it wax also cheap. I only found the dammage when deciding the oil leak should really be fixed. I bunged on a decent set of barrels and pistons from a scrap engine, and re used the well scarred head. It ran for years like that, never down on power or hard to start after replacing the wrecked pistons. It eventually dropped a valve, many years later. Still have the remains somewhere.

That head damage wasn't caused by rings as it extends beyond the bore. My guess is it was caused by a twat.

Just the effect of water in combustion chamber over an extended period of time.

on mine, the rings had smashed their way out of the top of the piston somehow and gotten trapped between the piston and head causing similar dammage, then someone had poped the head off, removed the debris. I went one further and replaced the pisteons but ran a head with very similar dammage. Water doesn't do that to a head, I had an engine where all the cultch casing had literally corroded away, gearbox totally shot, somehow the head was immaculate once a few kilos of thick clay mud were removed from inside the rocker cover. I still think it sensible to source a replacement engine though I have thashed a few years commuting out of 550s with parts that rough.

Ok martin here are the pictures as promised , the engine seems to be complete, but is totally stripped, this is how i bought it, it was stripped as it needs reconditioning, probably rebore and the usual things like cam chain and tensioners etc
Some of the outer covers are no good , the altenator cover has damage, and the sump plug hole has been welded up

The F1 exhaust is about as good as you will find for a second hand one, very solid , the side that you see is still quite bright but far from perfect, the rear where it does not get cleaned has fine surface corrosion but solid no holes , tiny crack where it clamps up, but very usable

Here is the link to the pictures the price is £300 for the lot

I'm sure the 400/4 was Parakeet.

Used a paddock stand with wheel balancer adaptor.

Pencils were used as ref point  to true by eye.

Took a while and used tone of spoke when tapped as a guide to tension.

Dont forget to measure offset before you strip the wheels :-[

Glad I did it as have never tried before, quite satisfying  8)

Its Uk, but picture looks better than reality, as lots of rusty areas but nothing too bad.

Nice to start with a fresh frame even if it takes ages to clean out all the threads ;D

Thanks for all the positive comments and encouragement.

Anyone who has tried a full rebuild/restore will know the highs and lows, but particularly the sense of satisfaction in bringing bikes back to life.

I often ponder whether to just go for function or as close to original new look.

I decided to keep the original seat cover as it was so good, but did powder coat the base as quite rusty.

Just picked up tank, seat cowl  and side panels from No.2 bike after getting painted.

Decided to get done in Toyota Orange Twist 4W5 its the colour used on new Aygo Excite and is a 3 stage pearl finish.

Looks like plain Orange but with a fine metallic finish which lights up in sunshine 8)

I havnt yet decided whether to fit tank decals or not.

I also have had a filler cover done in gloss black.

I will gets some pics up, but looks lovely ;D
